Pros:Tastes good, fresh ingredients, quick, inexpensive
Cons:Not exactly low-fat.
The Bottom Line: Fresh ingredients make a big difference with fast food.
Tijuana Flats is one of my favorites because it's fast, cheap, and always delicious. I love Tex-Mex foods and quite frankly its pretty easy to make at home so we usually dont go out for it. Tijuana Flats is a major exception to the rule; we go there on a regular basis. I love the food, the employees are friendly, the atmosphere is enjoyable, and the meal is served quickly.
Tijuana Flats are primarily in Florida but there are 2 in Georgia, 1 in Kentucky, and locations coming soon in Alabama and Indiana. Locations can be found on their website at: http://www.tijuanaflats.com/locations.htm
The location that I go to is in a strip mall so the restaurant is fairly small. Its somewhere between a restaurant and fast food. The atmosphere is very casual and it has murals painted on the walls. When you walk in you walk to the register and place your order. You will seat yourself at a table and the food will be delivered out to you. The food is served in a basket lined with paper. The cups are styrofoam. When you finish you throw your own trash away. There is usually an employee cleaning the tables or sweeping the floors and are eager to help if you might need something.
We usually have the same things every time. I always order the Ultimate Nachos for $6.00 because its my favorite. It is a huge pile of homemade tortilla chips loaded with beef, cheese, and other fresh toppings which the family shares. Sometimes I get the 2 beef tacos for $4.79. If Im on a diet that day I get the 2 tacos with black beans. My kids usually order a quesadilla which comes with your choice of steak, beef, cheese, bean, or spinach artichoke ranging in price from $4.00-$6.00. My husband always gets the Megajuana steak chimichanga for $7. The regular size is $4.00.
The menu is pretty short and intended to be quick eats. The portion size is very generous and the ingredients are fresh. There are no microwaves or freezers on the premises. The other choices are burritos (their specialty), enchiladas, tostados, and flautas. You can make any of the selections a meal with rice, beans, and a drink for an additional $1.79. The meals are very inexpensive, in the $5-$7 range excluding drinks. They except Cash, Master, Visa, and Debit for payment.
There are high chairs, crayons, and a coloring page for children. The atmosphere is suitable for children and ours like going there. Our kids always eat off of the main menu, they love it. There is a childrens menu for kids under 12. The choices are: burrito, taco, chicken fingers, or cheese quesadilla and it comes with a soft drink and Pez.
They have a world-famous hot bar with 12 extremely hot sauces which is fun to experiment with. They are pure fire. The bar features their world famous Smack My Butt & Call Me Sally..The Slap Heard Around The World hot sauce. The food is not spicy at all. The bar is where you spice up your own food.
We use this place as a fast food joint but the ingredients are far superior. When we dont feel like going in we we get carry out.
Sometimes, believe it or not, I cant eat all the nachos so take them home for leftovers. Typically left over nachos would be trash but I put them in the oven and they make a nice lunch the next day which is one of the benefits of having fresh ingredients.
This makes an excellent and inexpensive choice for Tex-Mex fast food.
