| singleguy1974's Full Review: Belkin 54g Wireless Cable/DSL Gateway Router (F5D7... |
When you think of wireless or wired routers not many people think of Belkin as a reliable brand. Most choose wireless or wired routers by Netgear, D-Link, Motorola, or Linksys. I have tried many wired routers before & have had good luck with many of the brands I have used. This was my first wireless router & choose this one at the time because it was only $10.00 after all the rebates. So, yes, I was mostly enticed by the price & wasn't thinking about the name brand or quality of the product. But, after having the wireless router on my network now since just after Thanksgiving 2004 & I extremely happy with it's features & reliability & has performed a lot better than I had expected or hoped for.
This router offers 802.11g 2.4GHZ which is also backwards compatible with 802.11b. So, your B wireless devices will work fine with this wireless router. This wireless router boasts a 3 minute easy install wizard, but I would have to say for me maybe 2 minutes top it took for me to set it up. The instruction manual is very clear & easy to understand & is good for the first timer getting into wireless networking. The router has both a NAT & SPI firewall which is excellent for your security. Some wireless routers only provide a NAT firewall which is adequate enough for protection. But, with the SPI firewall it monitors your outgoing & incoming data transfers for even more protection than just a NAT firewall can give you. It also offers both WPA Pre-Shared Keys as well as WPA (Radius Server), 128 bit WEP, & even 64 bit encryption. The router also includes 6 months free of parental control software for added protection for your kids. The firmware for this router updates itself if you turn that feature on within the setup options for your router. The range on this router states 1,500 feet under ideal conditions. I have tested it here in my condo & have had the wireless signal go up to 1,300 feet for me when I am outside. For most people that range will be far more than most will ever use or need. This wireless router also has a feature called 802.11g Xpress which when turned on in the options screen of your router boosts your network speed by up to 10 times faster than 802.11b wireless networks.
Overall after having using this wireless router since Thanksgiving 2004 I would recommend it to anyone & put it up against any other router on the market today. I have been hooking up this router for my clients that have asked me to set them up with a wireless network & have had nothing but good reports from them liking how easy it is to use, setup, & configure. And with the rebates always offered on Belkin routers almost every Sunday how can you pass up a deal that they give you buying their routers? Trust me when I say for the price you can not go wrong & will be presently surprised & happy with the routers performance.
