I read a lot of books, but I tend to avoid books considered literature. If a book's been recommended by Oprah or any other name, I usually skip it. When I read, I want to be entertained, maybe get a good laugh or a few thrills. I read a variety of books, mainly mysteries, thrillers, fantasy, science fiction and horror.
I've noticed a new proliferation of books about fantasy creatures appearing in the romance category these days, and have been sampling a few. When I sawy Cheryl Sterling's novel What Do You Say To a Naked Elf?, I just had to give it a shot. I was sure any book with a title like that had to be good for a few laughs, and I was right.
This book is about a "plain Jane" woman named Jane Drysdale who's life gets completely turned upside down one night when she accidentally runs over a rabbit and crashes her car. Her life just gets more and more complicated, as she is rescued by a group of men who turn out to be elves, and taken to Lowth, the land of elves, fairies and more. Turns out the rabbit she hit was an elf in rabbit form, and she's on trial for murder.
One of her rescuers is a half elf, half fairy sprite and will be her lawyer for the trial. Great, except he has never handled a murder case, since there are almost never any murder trials.
Things get weird when she discovers that the cool tattoo she has is actually written in a fairy language, and she copied it from her mother's journal. Next thing you know, she has some magic powers and the elves don't really know what to do with her. But that's okay, because she is getting pretty content in this land, and starting to fall in love.
Naturally, things immediately begin happening, and the next thing you know the enemy of the elves is demanding that she be turned over to him. So begins her next adventure, with people trying to kill her, others trying to make her queen, and lots of laughs.
While I expected this book to be humorous, I did not expect that it would have such a good story to go along with the humor. I found I couldn't stop reading because of the different twists and turns the story took, keeping me interested straight to the end.
Also surprisingly for books of this genre, while it did include "love scenes," the sex was not overdone. It fit naturally into the story without taking over the story, and was not exceedingly graphic or gratuitous. So many books about supernatural beings seem to be just an opportunity to write sex scenes with different beings, with the sex seeming to be the driving force in the story.
The characters in this book, despite being various supernatural beings, are well-developed and interesting, without being stereotypical or predictable.
This is the first book by Cheryl Sterling, and I look forward to reading more when she releases them.
