I don't know if you will ever return to this opinion to read this, but my husband actually chose this name for me when we were setting up our email accounts for the first time. He thought it would be temporary, but I never figured out how to change it!
It is based on my initials = KJG. Don't ask where the numbers came from...those were my husband's doing. I guess he had to meet that "at least 6 characters" thing.
Now I use it everywhere!

I was lucky (Reply to this comment)

Being used to Bulletin Boards before I joined here, I had already established KCFemme as my identity.
What does it mean? KC=Kansas City Femme=Yep, I'm female.
Why did I use it? Everyone always wanted to know whether you were m/f and where you're from.
Funny thing is, they still asked me the same stupid questions.

Why is that: (Reply to this comment)
by BrendaMetcalf
after you pick a boring name or use your boring real life one, you always think of so many you wish you had gone for. At Epinions there is no going back especially after you've established your WOT, I have seen some delete their accounts only to be able to pick that name they think will bring them fame and fortune...Enjoyed your review and still wonder, Do the letters and numbers mean anything? If it's to personal, I understand...

Another "don't" (Reply to this comment)

Don't base it on your real name, like I did. Talk about boring! I just figured yours was a play on C3P0 or R2D2.
I guess you aren't really a robot?

I can't argue with any of this.
Ken
PS: I choose my name way back when because AOL (who I USED to subscribe to) already had a KenKlein, KennethKlein, and any other variety of my real name. Frustrated, I pondered it for a moment, and the first thing that popped into my head was "LordBalfor" (that's the name of a character in a story I've been writing for ???? years - evil necromancer type of guy - not sure what that says about my personality - but I don't think I'll dwell on it).

You're so right (Reply to this comment)

but the sad part is that most readers who tend to lurk in the dungeons of Epinions (otherwise known as the Community Center) are probably already members and thus lamentably lumbered with their ill-chosen names. Your wise observations here will avail them not. How sad!
It really would be a good idea if Epinions posted a short summary embodying your advice as part of the sign-up page to prevent future members from being burdened with names as boring as mine or as hard to remember as yours.
Of course, that's the altruistic part of me talking. The dark side of me is thinking, "Oh, great! Now everyone will dream up catchy names, and you and all the other nondescripts on site will become even more invisible than you already are amidst a crowd of HotThongBabes."
Knowing how slow Epinions is to effect useful changes, however, I guess my dark side can rest easy, knowing that there will still be many new members who rue the day they choose user names like yours--whatever it was, I can't seem to remember it . . . You have my sympathy!

I was always curious.... (Reply to this comment)
by sibhreach
Y'know, when I first started reading some of your reviews, I wondered the significance of your name. :) You're totally right, though - something so simple as a name is a big thing here, and online in general.
I mean, we can't see ya online, so you have to show yourself as best as possible. Did you ever talk to the Epinions staff about getting your name re-vamped????
...C. "sibhreach" (means "changeling" in Scots-Gaelic)

I wish i could change my name to something better also. Maybe the folks at epinions could make this possible?
Well anyways, one thing you could do though to solve your problem is put a picture of a hothongbabe in your profile :)
Im just kidding...Very helpful opinion though...

I had no idea the level of involvement I'd end up getting into. I used my email address - and everybody thinks my name is Wendy!
You watch, tomorrow someone new will read this and make their name "HotThongBabe"!

Names are important, Victoria (and Kristin) but I'm a sound believer that the quality of your work will make a name FOR you @ Epinions.
True, you may not immediately garner the instant gratification that a fancy name might generate - but if there's nothing of substance behind that name, then the attention will be short lived.
Remember, a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.

I think... (Reply to this comment)
by Greatpilgrim
a lot of us would have chosen differently if we could do it over again, knowing what we know now. What you say is so true; people will scan lists of names and click on the ones that spark their imagination. I came across a member recently called deliciouswords and the name itself prompted me to read this person's reviews.
I haven't seen this issue addressed at all before, but I was thinking myself that it needed to be addressed. Names ARE important.
