mominbricknj's Full Review: Better Homes and Gardens New Cook Book
Better Homes and Gardens is a tried and true cookbook that has been around since 1930 during the Depression Era. The first edition had alot of recipes that helped America eat great meals on a small budget. As times have changed so has Better Homes & Gardens contents to reflect the changes in needs and trends! From the WWII edition where it focused on canning and preserving the bounties of America's patriotic Victory gardens, to the 1960's edition that focused on our love for ethnic cooking, right down to the 1970's "newbies", the crockpot and microwave oven. Did I mention crockery cooking is one of my favorites? You can turn an inexpensive cut of meat into a tender tasty meal with no work at all!
Besides the fact that BH&G has been keeping up with the times for over 70 years there are so many other reasons that more than 30 MILLION copies have been sold!
The fact that they test every recipe in an everyday kitchen like yours or mine and keep at it until it is perfect is just one of them. They even try it with time saving options like frozen or prepackaged items so that those of us who are a duel income household can have great meals quick and avoid all those fatty meals like McD's and BK! By the way, that is another symbol of their keeping up with the busy american lifestyle!
Another reason this cookbook is so great is the fact that they have tons of great tips, guides, photos and more right there in the front of the book for quick easy reference! This is unlike alot of other cookbooks where they hide all the help in the back and make us search! All of these are indexed right at the beginning of the section so there is less need to flip back and forth! Some f them include your "pantry primer" which teaches you what you need for a functional pantry thus saving you time later on trips to the store! Another is "meal planning". This section has everything from dietary guidelines, to how to read labels and watch fat, sodium and cholestrol, to great meals all planned out right down to what page the recipes are on!
To think! That's only the first 36 pages of a 575 page book! I'm going to tell you just a little bit more about one of my favorite cookbooks but from there you will have to buy one of your own because after I'm done writing this epinion I'm going to make my favorite "snickerdoodle" cookies from page 193, which if I may add are great with the new cinnamon chips out by Hersheys that I decided to add on a whim one day! On to the rest of my epinion before I can't resist the urge!
Besides all the great help and ideas this book supplies you with it has tons of great recipes that are all color-coded with tabs marking each section for quick and easy referral as well as an index at the beginning of each section! There's even "beverages", "sauces and relishes", and "canning and freezing". These name only three of 21 recipe sections included. And of course, there is the index in the back which is alphabetic and the metric conversion table as well.
I do believe that about sums it up for this cookbook, but then who am I to say that my short article can do justice to 70 YEARS of perfection! If you don't have a copy of your own borrow or buy one soon and decide for yourself! It can really change your families outlook on some great foods and your outlook on the kitchen after a long day! Just be careful if you borrow it! You may NEVER want to give it back! As for me, I'm off to my baking and while they're in the oven I think I'll find something new for dinner tomorrow night! Happy cooking!
