Moving on the cheap
Jul 03 '01
The Bottom Line Moving doesn't HAVE to be expensive, especially for single ppl with little to move
Here's 5 ways to save money when moving:
1: Sell or give away stuff you haven't used in a year:
Chances are if you haven't used it in a year you probably won't.
Garage sales and flea markets are an excellent way to help raise money for a move.
Unless you are lucky and your move is free, the extra cash WILL come in handy ;)
2: Upgrade appliances and furniture NOW:
If you are planning on replacing an appliance, bed, furniture or any other large item NOW is the time to do it.
Sell the "old" item now and buy a replacement when you move to your new place.
3: Compare shipping and storage costs vs how much the item is worth:
Sometimes it is actually cheaper to sell and replace an item than it is to ship and store it, especially if you buy used stuff at the new place.
4: Use a trailer:
If you can slim down what you are going to take with you enough you can fit it all in a 6x12 uhaul trailer and tow it behind your car
A trailer for me cost $172.00 vs $1000.00 for a truck and car dolly.
The 6x12 trailer is only a good option for single people with medium to large cars/trucks.
Always rent the biggest trailer your car/truck can pull as you can never have enough room.
The big trailer isn't much more expensive than the small one either.
Any car will get better gas mileage than a uhaul truck pulling your car on a dolly
5: Travel in the week:
Many times moving vans are cheaper in the week not to mention more avalible.
Also some hotels offer discounted rates for staying in the week.
