Living in DC with no car makes grocery shopping a major pain. Trying to carry bags back up this hill from a rather over-priced Safeway wasn't cutting it, especially with my Lupus. Cabs to a supermarket were running about $30 round trip. So I started experimenting with online grocery shopping. So far, Peapod by Giant is the best I've found.
It's a bit overwhelming at first. There are soooo many items to browse through. If you know me at all, you know that this was actually a plus. I had a blast. What you do is click on 'aisles' and then on sub headings within the aisels. For instance I can go to the dairy aisle and from there pick my milk and such. I was missing quite a bit the first time just from the shear volume of what they had. I got that stuff on my list the second time I ordered though so every time after I can now open my previous orders and just select the things I've run out of.
Also, the sales going on at the store are honored at the website and they make it really easy for you to find the current deals. On top of that, I can use my Giant card to get my little points or whatever every time I shop.
Once you've selected what you want, you make an account. This is a breeze and is pretty much just where you live and where you want it delivered (you could order for your elderly mom if you wanted), how you wish to pay, and then select when you want it delivered.
As far as pay goes, it's every choice that you have at the physical store. They take all major credit cards, debit cards, or checks. You can even elect to hand a check to the delivery guy if you wish. Speaking of handing things to the delivery guy, he takes any coupons you may have and then goes back deducts those from your total bill at the store. Sweeeeeet. Don't forget to also hand him a tip.
The delivery charge is really low. I believe the max is like 6 bucks, but it's usually around $4-$4.50 for me because if you select certain times for delivery, you get a break on the charges. You can have your items delivered as early as the next day, including Sundays. Beats the hell outta Netgrocer's 4-5 day wait. Plus the guy brings them right to your kitchen and he is more than happy to wait if you wish to unpack and check to make sure it's all there.
Everything is packed nicely in these really sturdy bags, and cold items are transported in a cooler for you. If you can't be home for the delivery, they'll leave your order wherever you specify, and leave it in the coolers then pick those up on your next order.
As far as over-all prices go, I can see no difference between the internet prices and the local Giant Supermarket prices. These guys are saving me an arm and a leg. Plus, after my first order I got a code to take $5 off of each of my next 4 orders.
I can't believe how inexpensive and convenient this is compared to other online grocery sites. I have to give this one 5 stars so far. Everything has been right on time and delivered by the nicest guys ever, and in perfect shape. I believe they have a fairly nationwide delivery so do try them if you have a need for this kind of service. I wish I had found out about them years ago....
