Old is gold.

The Bottom Line Don't let yourself be sucked in by pretty colours & loud noises. The simple things in life are often the best.
Once upon a time video games were fun, enjoyable and most importantly playable. I'm referring to the era of the 8-16 bit consoles. Sega Master System, Megadrive & Super Nintendo etc.
Back in those times all you had to do was buy a game turn it on and play. The game could be saved on the cartridge with a password or often completed in a single sitting, but you still left fulfilled and with the desire to come back and play again.
Don't get me wrong, I think " Perfect Dark " is a brilliant game as are a few other modern titles. Golden Eye, House of The Dead 2 etc but there seems to be more garbage then gold on the market. Playstation, Nintendo 64 & Dreamcast seem more content showing off graphics & sound effects then focusing on actual game play.
Games today are becoming too complex and technical to a point where technicality over shadows the fun and enjoyment.
Resident Evil for example is great when you're blowing off zombies heads, but as soon as their dead you spend the next half hour running backwards and forwards in a monotonous frenzy, looking to find pieces to fit a puzzle.
Another problem is add on features, eg. play guides, memory cards, expansion packs, rumble packs. All this crap is expensive & unnecessary. Us consumers have been taken for fools, what a hide to charge $700 (Australian) for the latest Playstation 2. Luckily they don't stay this price for long.
Another beef I have with modern game systems (to go with the rest) are these new switch board controls. Buttons, triggers, analogue sticks, shoulder buttons, directional pads, memory screens on the controls. What is the point with all this garbage when in most cases you only need a few buttons and a directional pad? I can't speak for everyone, but I've only got two hands to use at a time. I'm not saying its all bad but I just think the main focus is to make money before entertain & dazzle with pointless video play. Today I find myself sitting in front of the Megadrive, while the Dreamcast remains dead weight.
