Hey there! Good to hear from you...I had forgotten you were in Richmond...and I'm glad to read that you know whereof I wrote. I wonder if Bill's BarBQ is still in Richmond...if so, have a sandwich on my behalf!

I already extended my offer to you for a ham date. It's your call. ;)
Great review. Virginians love their pork, yessiree.

Thanks! Oh, my family will NEVER abandon the taste for Smithfield ham...it's just sometimes the pocketbook can't support the hunger.
Thanks for stopping by, and for your kind words.

A silk purse indeed! (Reply to this comment)

I agree that you imparted a marvelous new spin to this Spam theme. But how could your parents turn from Smithfield to Spam -- it seems a sacrilege!
And how can Smithfield use this line as a complimentary description of their ham, "the yellow translucent fat indicative of a peanut fed hog" -- (now that's what I call advertising prowess; makes me want a piece of that ham right now).
Wonderful, memory-evoking writing (except for the pork grinder and Spam bits).

What a fascinating observation, that "few restaurants seem to serve vegetables in the States." Yes, vegetables don't get much table space in USA restaurants. We seem to be quite the carnivourous nation. My own suspicion is that is one way we manifest our [relative]wealth. Meats cost a lot more than vegetables, and s/he who eats more meat must be wealthier...no?
My own parents were children during the Great Depression of the 1930's, when families with no previous history of poverty suddenly became quite poor. Many families had to do without meat (and many other luxuries) for the first time. When those "Depression children" became adults, they [often] had the wealth of the healthy post-WWII economy...and splurged on meat as a show of their new-found wealth.
That being said, this generation also lived with the constant fear of poverty (still often does) and often hoards can goods and is miserly with money when it is not warranted out of this fear.
I can't put a whole lot of backing to my argument, but your observation provoked interesting reflections.
thanks for stopping by, Carmen!

Oh, those hothouse tomatoes are hideous. I usually get the little "cocktail tomatoes" at the store here...they cost a bloody fortune, but they are soooooo worth it!
I confess I'm not much of an okra fan...although fried okra with catsup is pretty good eatin'!
Thanks for dropping by!

You know, I'm glad you invoked the "sow's ear" metaphor...not only for its value as a compliment, but because it gives me a sense of completion. I had wanted to work it in to my piece somehow, but couldn't make it fit...but you provided the closure for me! Thanks!

Thanks, Nick! I always appreciate your reading my work and I revel in your comments. I DON'T think fez_monkey was anticipating "tone poems" in this write-off...but the muse has a mind of her own, not to be monkeyed with (which I say with all due respect).
I'm glad you had a reference point for some of the grub I described. I must say that I could use a big bowl of Brunswick Stew right now...

Thanks, Teresa! I wasn't sure what direction to go with this piece...thought about writing on the annual Spamarama in Austin, but I've never attended it (due to aforementioned pork trauma).
You're a lot closer geographically to this cuisine than I! ...but we do have superior spring rolls and sushi in my zip code.

You have got me so homesick I have tears on my face. Where am I to find okra in Alaska? We only have hothouse tomatoes (in South Georgian: tuh-MAY-tahs) here. And ham? Never.
This is one of the most beautiful essays I've read on epinions, and I certainly was surprised to find it under the SPAM write-off.
This one goes to the printer. Thank you -- Kristin

This beautifully elegant review, inspired by... Spam? Continuing the pork theme (or, arguably, beating it to death), you well and truly concocted a silk purse from a sow's ear.

A truly inspired piece of writing, Marcia.... (Reply to this comment)

...that works both as a slice of Southern culture and as an ode to times gone by.
I lived in North Carolina for four years, and had enough pig-pickins and fixins to last a lifetime, including multiple variations on your Brunswick Stew.
You may not realize it, but to this reader it felt like you took a simple assignment about SPAM and turned it into a spare, beautifully-crafted tone poem about your heritage.
SPAM never had it so good.
Bravo.
