| hanko2000's Full Review: Spiegelau Collection Bordeaux Wine Glasses |
Spiegelau is one of the world's largest manufacturer of glassware -- very big in Europe. These Vino Grande are an excellent value and actually used by many of the finest restaurants in America. Their competitor, Riedel, is better known and more expensive but Spiegelau is a better value for the following reasons. Vino Grande is designed on the same premise as Riedel, which is a wine shape's will effect the smell and taste of the paired wine -- that's why you see wine glasses for specific varietals of wine such as Bordeaux which is wine from a region in France. These glasses are also good for Cabernet Sauvignon and any other powerful/strong red wines. The shape of the glass captures the wine's aroma and directs the wine to a specific area on your tongue with the appropriate taste buds to better taste the characteristics of the paired wine. I was skeptical at first but once you try and compare the tast of the wine in a regular wine glass you might find in a restaurant or bar you can taste the difference (tip: also don't fill up your wine glass, pour only about 1/3 of the glass so you have room to swirl the wine and release the aroma) Anyway Vino Grande is really liked by the top tier fine restaurants b/c it's almost the same as Riedel (most expensive, best qualtity) but it can take the abuse and pounding of daily wear and tear in a busy restaurant. So these glasses last longer and are also dishwasher safe. Saving the restaurant money -- don't have to replace as many broken wine glasses and don't have to have someone hand washing the wine glasses. Note for a set of 6 Riedel Vinum which is their main glass line you'll pay double of Spiegelau -- so these are much better value for home use and will last a long time. I still have my first set.
