by 4-1-1 | Jul 05 '01
Tasty, inexpensive, somewhat hard to find. Good beer is made in the country of Austria.

I just wanted to say that this was another excellent beer review of yours, Tom. Sometimes, if there's a really long string of good reviews, I just like to leave a basic comment of praise. You seem to have a way of breaking down all of the basics one needs to cover to make an informative review but without turning it into a boring mush of facts. So, that's it, keep it up!

Good questions. There was a huge beer rivalry between Germany and Austria long ago and trade restriction grew out of this rivalry -- partly because of the aggressive marketing practices of the Bavarian breweries.

Part of the reason why Germany adopted the Rheinheitsgebot  was to protect its own market.

Never knew antyhing about Austrian beer, or Swiss beer until recently. I wonder if Adambrau is any relation to the Adambier I so admired.

I'm surprised that Austria doesn't have the Rinheitsgebot, you'd think being so close to Germany and Bavaria at that, they would.

It's funny I don't know what the situation is in Germany now but I would expect with the European Union and free trade that any European country can export their crap to Germany and at lower prices. I wonder if that will affect the future standing of the Reinheitsgebot.
