This is Truly My Decade!Jul 06 '01 (Updated Jul 24 '01) Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line These are the movies of my youth and they will always be. When I look at Star Wars or Aliens I go back in time and relive my youth. I was brutal to the extreme with this list. There are simply too many movies here that I love and watch over and over and they never lose the magic. The 1970's was amazing for the movies, as you will see when you survey my list. In response to a comment posted on a previous top ten list and I qoute "What were the 10 best films of the 1970s? Please rank your list and briefly (2 to 4 sentences per choice) justify why they make the list." This is the criteria I follow, well I try to follow it. =;0) First The Honorable Mentions: Five Easy Pieces (1970); Airport (1970); Tora! Tora! Tora! (1970); Harold and Maude (1971); The French Connection (1971); The Sting (1973), Live and Let Die (1973); Smokey and the Bandit (1977); Taxi Driver (1976); Grease (1978); The Deer Hunter (1978); Mad Max (1979); Being There (1979); Life of Brian (1979); MASH (1970); One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975); Halloween (1978); Up in Smoke (1978); The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975); Chinatown (1974); Deliverance (1972); Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977); A Clockwork Orange (1971); Dirty Harry (1971); The Exorcist (1973); American Graffiti (1973). 1. The Godfather (1972); The Godfather: Part II (1974) - The Definitive mob movie series. All three of these movies are classics and as a complete story should only take up one spot in the top ten movies of all time list. 2. Enter the Dragon (1973) - Bruce Lee died before his time, way before his promise could be realized. Enter The Dragon never gets old, there will never be another Bruce Lee and there is no one better. 3. Blazing Saddles (1974) - Mel Brooks back when he was firing on all comic cylinders. He skewers the cowboy movie with a vengeance and yes even Randolph Scott makes an appearance. 4. Jaws (1975) - Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the water, naked, a shark comes along to ruin your good time. Classic opening sequence in this one folks. 5. Rocky (1976), Rocky II (1979) - When the list of the best movies of all time is revealed all three of the Rocky movies will be there. Well at least I know that these two will be. 6. Carrie (1976) - If you've ever been teased in school and you just wanted to get back at your tormenters, see Carrie and channel her spirit. 7. Star Wars (1977) - The Star Wars series of movies are the same as the Godfather movies for a different reason. They are just plain good, engaging and the story works on a shallow Shakespearean level, oedipal conflicts and all that kind of stuff. 8. Saturday Night Fever (1977) - Disco came to life with the movie and it never went away. Watch this movie and then go to Polly Ester's and get down, just like John Travolta, back when he was thin. 9. Animal House (1978) - Toga! Toga! Toga! Toga Party! The college fraternity experience may not be too far away from the portrayal in this movie. This movie has a heart and isn't as mean spirited as some of the more recent College Movies. 10. Alien (1979) - This Horror movie in space still scares the heck out of me. I like to not watch it for several years and then watch it again for the scary thrills. This movie will be on my Top Ten of all time list. |
