For fabulous, reasonably priced sushi in Greenwich Village

The Bottom Line For special, yet reasonably priced, sushi in the West Village, this is a new and excellent choice.

There is no shortage of places to eat in the Village, but many are mediocre places that appeal to tourist trade for a one-shot. On the other hand, there are sensational restaurants the locals go to repeatedly. Recently a number of places opened up on Seventh Avenue South, below the Christopher Street subway station on 7th Avenue. One is Indian, another a trendy seafood place and my favorite is Yoko for sushi, indoors or out. Yoko looks ordinary, but it's quite a few notches above your typical sushi place. It's still undiscovered and crowds haven't gathered, so I'm hoping to give it a well-deserved boost.

There are specials. One favorite is the chopped toro with bits of tempura crust accompanied by delicately sliced scallions. It's a Nobu-type delicacy at a third the price. There is the usual selection of rolls, Bento boxes (in the $8-$11 range), sushi, sashimi, tempura and teriyaki. And then there are the special rolls - softshell crab, eel with avocado or cucumber, tempura roll, spicy fish, etc.

Two can fill up nicely for around $30, ordering ala carte - or cheaper if ordering the prepared meals.

The setting is typical sushi bar, nothing fancy, but there are tables outdoors, which is unusual for a sushi restaurant.
