How To Choose A Pilsner...A CHEAP One, That Is!Jul 06 '01 Write an essay on this topic.

The Bottom Line When buying cheap pilsner beers, experience is the best teacher. Let me share my knowledge with you!
The term "pilsner" refers to a light-colored, somewhat sweet beer. In my thinking, this covers most of the beers brewed by the major American brewing companies. That gives you plenty of choices, to be sure. The fun part is trying to figure out what the best beer is...for the least amount of money! This is a game that I have been playing for years. Oh sure, I can afford to buy the higher-priced imports, and sometimes do. But I like to go back to my roots, to the old college days when a three dollar six pack meant a good Saturday night. Let's take a walk down memory lane, and look at some of the cheap beers that are commonly available. My favorite cheap beer has always been Keystone Light. It is a product of the Coors Brewing Company. I love Coors Light, and Keystone has basically the same taste. It does seem to be a little more watery than Coors, which makes Keystone Light seem like a lighter beer to drink. The slogan is "Always Smooth, Never Bitter", and that is the truth. Keystone Light has a nice, easy to drink flavor. It is truly the Cadillac of cheap beers. Another popular beer on the bargain rack is Old Milwaukee. The main draw for this is that in some areas Old Milwaukee is packaged in 14 oz. cans. Old Milwaukee has a stronger taste than a Budweiser or Coors. The bitterness that turns some people away from beer is prevalent in Old Mil. It also seems to be a little too heavy. I would place this one firmly in the middle of the scale. Milwaukee's Best is a product of the Miller Brewing Company. This is one of the cheapest national beers on the market. Commonly known as "the beast", Milwaukee's Best is a beer that is best used when inviting large numbers of people over that you have no interest in impressing. The beer itself has a fair taste. It usually tastes somewhat metallic, and I wonder if it doesn't come from the bottom of the vat. It is moderately heavy, but has an overall good flavor and is easy to drink. For some reason, Milwaukee's Best leaves its' victims with a terrible hangover! But, at less than three dollars a six pack, what do you expect? I would consider this one drinkable...but if this is Milwaukee's Best, I don't want to try the worst. Finally, I want to throw out a handful of beers to avoid at all costs. No matter how cheap they are, you do not want to purchase these brands unless you are an absolute alcoholic. The first is Meister Brau, which must be German for "lousy beer". You will swear that there is something floating in it, it is so heavy. Another to avoid is Olympia. The slogan is "It's The Water." Well, this water must be from the sewer because the beer is so bitter that it is difficult to drink. My lowest rated beer of all time is a brand that I recently tried in St. Louis, MO.: Dirt Cheap Beer. Produced for sale in a store of the same name, Dirt Cheap is the worst beer ever made outside of someone's garage. It has a terrible taste that reminds you of licorice mixed with BB's. The color is a bit dark, making me worry about where the water came from. The only good thing is the white can with the generic black lettering. I would avoid this one at all costs. Well, next time you are cruising the beer aisle, don't limit yourself to the fancy beers. Go slumming, and try some of the cheap beers. You may be surprised to find that some of them are actually pretty good. But beware - you may find yourself with a six pack of something you can't unload! |
