1950 I Can Bearly BelieveJul 07 '01 Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line I could not believe all the great films produced in the 1950's and I think there will be some surprises for you all as well. 1950’s started a lot of Sci-Fi and Monster movie trends and produced motion pictures that I for one will never forget and I watch them from time to time, year in and year out. The Honorable Mentions: Harvey (1950); Father of the Bride (1950); An American in Paris (1951); Rear Window (1954); Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954); Around the World in Eighty Days (1956); 12 Angry Men (1957); Some Like It Hot (1959). 1. The African Queen (1951) – Humphrey Bogart, Katherine Hepburn and director John Huston combined their sizable talents to give us this classic film. The acting, writing and direction make this really one of the best movies ever made. The tagline for this movie says it all “The greatest adventure a man ever lived…with a woman!” 2. The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) – The 1950’s produced some fantastic Sci-Fi films that even today serve as the basis for movie, after movie. This is not just another Aliens visiting the earth movie, t is among the first and the best. 3. The War of the Worlds (1953) – From an Orson Welles radio show to the big screen, this movie about some not so nice aliens destroying things could be called a 1950’s Independence Day (1996). 4. Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953) – Marilyn Monroe is the only reason I wanted to see this movie and if it gets you to watch this movie then so be it. It is one of her best. 5. The Ten Commandments (1956) – Charlton Heston as Moses, Yul Brynner as Pharaoh Rameses, Edward G. Robinson; Yvonne DeCarlo; John Derek; Vincent Price; John Carradine and the list goes on. There is only one Cecil B. DeMille and one Ten Commandments. Take a look at this true Hollywood epic. 6. The King and I (1956) – Yul Brynner is the king of Siam asking, “Shall we Dance?” Take this movie for a spin and be entertained. 7. Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956) – Do you know your neighbor? How well do you know anyone? Would you know if an Alien, who looked and acted just like them, replaced them? This is one of my personal favorites. 8. The Fly (1958) – This movie was remade in 1986 with Jeff Goldblum as Seth Brundle a different scientist with the same problem, a pesky fly. When you build your transporter and you will, see this movie first. 9. The Blob (1958) – Another sci-fi classic remade in 1988 with a more vicious fast moving Blob, but in this the 50’s version this Blob moves so slowly and looks so phony it’s just great to watch and sometimes snicker. 10. North by Northwest (1959) – Alfred Hitchcock has no equal in the realm of the suspense movie and in this one an unsuspecting civilian Cary Grant is immersed in a spy vs spy scenario and forced to run for his life cross country. I’ve seen and can recommend every movie that Alfred Hitchcock has ever made. |
