| planetrjl's Full Review: Select Comfort Classic Mattress |
This is a short review, but mainly commentary review to support other people's reviews.
Select Comfort beds ARE comfortable, when you purchase their top-of-the-line $3000 models.
The Classic Line should be compared to the inflatable rubber mattresses that you can get at a tent supply.
I owned a Select Comfort Classic, in which I had it for 10 months before I had to move it to the guest room. I began to have lower back problems after sleeping on it, and didnt realize after months of visiting the chiropractor, that the bed was the issue. I had tried every setting, and could never find relief. Finally, I purchased a 4 inch thick memory foam ($350) to reduce the feeling of the pain. It helped greatly, but it never felt the same as a regular mattress. I even slept on a firm ExpressBed for 2 weeks and never experienced that same back pain.
I now am back on a regular mattress, and my back problems have gone away. That was also a good excuse to stop taking Pain medications. So in closing, if you have pain in your back or spine, and it has begun after you started sleeping on your Select Comfort or other air bed, try switching back for a few weeks and see if the bed is the issue.
Parts/Hardware:
The mattress cover is durable, and doesnt rip, but can snag easily. It always had an odd foam odor I could never get rid of (even after sending it to the dry cleaners twice). The motor is louder than a vacuum cleaner and a little slow to fill both chambers (about 10-15 minutes). The cords and controls seemed fairly well made, but not any better made than a $100 AirBed that I bought at WalMart. Setup is fairly easy, considering you don't have to do it often, and packing the mattress in boxes makes it convenient for moving or storing. With the Foam and all the inserts, the bed will fit in 3 large microwave boxes or 1-2 TV boxes (if you dont keep the original).
CUSTOMER SERVICE:
Within the first 2-4 months of owning it, I had contacted Customer Service several times. They would give me similar answers "You need to give it time to find your comfort firmness", and "We can send you another foam insert to fix the problem". NONE of these things ever resolved the issue. I even tried exchanging it for a single chamber system, but they said that it would cost me $300 ? That seemed pricey for something I had just purchased and developed back pain from. Overall, I think the Phone Rep's are uninterested in problem-solving, but more interested in putting a band-aid on the problem, and not spending any company money on resolving issues (I got the impression that the rep would get into trouble if I asked them to send a replacement part for no charge).
PS - If you're wondering what happened to my Select Comfort bed, I sold it, because my guests were complaining of back pain as well.
