Thanks for your expertise!

Angie,
Thank you for your sympathy. I need to marry a computer tech too--do you have any young, beautiful, intelligent computer-techie, available girlfriends?

CAT,
This response to the kindest comment I've ever received is long overdue. First, let me thank you for your encouraging words. I have read them more than once and each time they inspire. Thank you. A thousand thanks! Whether I deserve the fireworks show of praise you gave is another matter. Are you reading this? Will you look back here, after so long? I hope so. I hope also that I've convinced you to arrange a means of backup for your files--especially if you're using a Gateway! Welcome to epinions, welcome, enjoy, communicate, write! I will be reading...

greenboat:
I just posted a review of Gateway. I only wish that I would have read the other reviews, especially your eloquent piece, prior to publishing mine. I was extremely brief, in contrast to my usual writing style. I assumed that Epinions wanted brief, direct reviews, and abbreviated my remarks. I really had so much more to say about my 12-month odyssey with Gateway. Any computer manufacturer that replaces your speaker system 11 times, before letting you know that all of the returned speaker systems were restored by replacing the power transformer, deserves to be publicly lynched in the same manner that you did. Your review is an inspiration to me. I love this site and intend to become a regular contributor and participant, thanks to your enkindlement. I am an aspiring writer and I keep a lot of my content, along with ALL of my personal and financial records, on my hard drive. If I ever lost all of that, I would be devastated. Again, my compliments and thanks. I entered my review under the same category, if you care to read it. If you would care to write me direct, you can address your e-mail to: ojos529@earthlink.net.
I would enjoy corresponding with you. Thanks and best of all to you.

Great story. Sad, yet written with wonderful humor. (Reply to this comment)

I wish I had some spare money so I could send you a custom-made computer that would actually be stable and work.
Well, you've convinced another person to never buy a Gateway. It amazes me how little companies care about their customers. But, I see evidence of that every day. People need to start serious boycotts of some of these corporations and simply stop spending money.

Welome to the wonderful world of computing (Reply to this comment)

A good opinion...You seem very talented as a writer.I enjoyed your piece..
Gateway and Dell both replace your parts with refurbished and I believe tested replacements.
It is your responsibility to back up your work and any inportant data that you need...Your drive
can take a dive at any time. The company makes it pretty clear on their service contracts.
Even though you have purchased an extended warranty it usually will cover only onsite replacement of the motherboard. The rest you can be walked through...They are not difficult.
As far as taking it to the Country Store for repair....one problem....length of time ....AND.control of loss of your data...Gateway could have sent a new hard drive and you could have used it to copy your whole OS files and all at your convience...
I hope I have helped..Take Care...Peace...Harry

You, my friend, are not alone!!! (Reply to this comment)

My MIL experienced a similar incident when her Gateway was about 1.5 years old. (Kind of makes me question that "2-year trade in program" they run...) They were watching TV one night and NO ONE was using the computer. All of the sudden it started making the most unbelievable racket, and they could only stop it by unplugging it. The hard drive had crashed. Gateway's solution? They replaced it with a "new" hard drive. Great! NOT! The "new" hard drive had apparently been used before, as there were 4 different modems listed, making it impossible to find theirs without deleting them first. It also only recgonized 16 colors...
HEY! Maybe they got your old one? I'll look for your missing files.....
GREAT REVIEW! Keep up the good work!
Kim :-)

I do hope you have a backup copy of it somewhere. :-)
A belated welcome to Epinions -- if this review is typical of your work (and I intend to check out your other offerings post haste), then I do hope we'll see a lot more of you.

feeling your pain... (Reply to this comment)

Ouch! They threw away your precious hard drive, with all of those hours of work that can never, ever be duplicated? There ought to be a law against that!! I am increasingly thankful that I am married to a computer techie who can replace - and repair - hard drives himself. If the writings you lost are as entertaining as this, it was truly a loss to be mourned.
