| planetrjl's Full Review: Fossil Multifunction or Chinese Tic Crystal Watch |
I am the owner of 8 Fossil Watches, and I wanted to write a brief summary about the brand and its quality.
Fossil has kept up with what is most important in today's watch. There are 3 important factors:
Style
Function
Ease Of Use
Cost with Quality
With all my Fossil watches, all have this similarity. I believe that nowadays one shouldn't have just one watch for everything. Especially not with Fossil around to help people afford to. All of my watches were reasonably priced and are still going (some for 5 years).
Style:
Fossil has always chosen slightly different patterns/styles than just the basic design out there. There is always something in their watches which sets them apart and make some people say 'I've never seen a watch like that before". One thing that is a pro and con at the same time, is the inability to find the same watch for sale the next year. Fossil makes all of their watches in limited numbers (making them even more unique), so don't expect to buy the same watch if you lose it a year later.
Function:
Fossil's Big Tic designs are always functional and have the necessities, without being overdone or over-complex. Time and date is what is necessary, and they know it. I've had many (other brand) watches that have 25 different functions, and not one of them last (due to the functions stop working).
For their watches that have multiple features (other than time), Fossil was kind enough to add in 2 batteries. One for the timekeeping, and the other for electronic feature (when model includes it).
Ease Of Use:
Every watch that I have seen Fossil carry are all easy to use or program. I've never come across a watch (even trying out in the stores) that took reading multiple pages in a manual to figure out. I have a $500 Seiko watch that stays in the drawer, because I cannot figure out how to set the date, and it's always off.
Cost/Quality:
Considering most Fossils run under $100, I think that speaks for itself. Most people that ask me, assume they cost much more (unless they are a Fossil owner themselves). The construction of every Fossil I've owned is very heavy duty, and always appears to be incredibly well-made. There is no quality cutting here, which makes the pricepoint even more appealing. I've looked at Swatch, with the cheaply made quality and feel, Fossil has nothing to worry about. Only one of them has had to have the battery replaced, and that was for the feature, and not for the timekeeping portion.
Other features and design:
Some of my Fossils have unique functioning designs. I have a few interesting faces on watches with unique abilities, one that spells out "Happiness" in Chinese, one that counts to '60' in Japanese, one that spells "Luck" in Chinese, and another that Blinks from Silver to a waffle-blue pattern. I've also done a "Build-A-Watch", and was quite happy with that.
Customer service:
Two times I have had to call Fossil for customer service, they have been extremely helpful. Never problems with the watches themselves, but due to my fault, I had broken the rubber on the band, and the customer service agent sent me a band as a replacement, due to understanding the particular situation. That is excellent customer service!
Warranty:
Fossil puts out an amazing warranty for 11 years. I couldn't ask for a better coverage, considering my Seiko only came with a 5 year, and cost me about $500. I've never had to use the warranty yet, except for a band which was my fault anyway. Fossil also gives the option to go into a Fossil store (if you're lucky enough to live near one), and have them clean up minor scratches for you free of charge.
*Update 8/05:
I've purchased my 11th Fossil watch, and still no problems or timekeeping issues. I'm a life'r!
