Average airport hotel

Written: Apr 15 '05
Pros:Large rooms, clean.
Cons:Terrible restaurant, bland food.
The Bottom Line: The Crowne Plaza looked much better if you have to stay near the airport. Otherwise I'd head over to Dearborn!

I was in Detroit on business for 4 nights. My downtown hotel was overbooked, so I was transfered to the Hilton Suites just outside the airport. They run a free shuttle from the airport to the hotel which you can call via a complimentary phone in the terminal. I waited for 40 minutes and it never showed up. There is more than one terminal, so I'm guessing it went there. Taxi cost me $11.

The hotel is basically equipped with a lounge and restaurant area including a bar, and there is a small exercise room and swimming pool and jucuzzi. The indoor pool connects to an outdoor pool which was closed during my visit in April. I can't see why the pool was closed - I've swam in pools in the Alps in winter before.

The room was comfortable, and as a suite, had a lounge area, kitchen items and an ajoining bed and bathroom. The kitchen was composed of a fridge, microwave and coffee machine. The omission of a kettle meant making tea was impossible. The rooms were clean, as were all the communal areas. The decor was tired but inoffensive.

The restaurant served a bland and unexciting menu, and the food was at best uninteresting. I tried a few things on the menu, but this is not a place to eat. I can only imagine that most of the food comes from the freezer. The breakfast selection was also narrow, the eggs looked unappealing even when quite fresh. Overall, a poor selection of food.

There is no shop, so I took to walking to the Crowne Plaza down the street for phonecards and water.

Hispeed internet access was provided at a daily cost of $9.95. There is also a business center, complimentary to all guests, which allows internet and printing for free, but there is a $.10 charge for copying.

The location is convenient for the airport but not a lot else - there is nothing in the surrounding area and if you don't hire a car, then you'll find that taxis are expensive - a trip to the shopping mall cost $32 each way.
