Windows Or No Windows, That Is The QuestionJul 08 '01 Write an essay on this topic.

The Bottom Line OS X is the clear general choice, as it's newer, but it's totally incompatible with Windows apps, because no emulators are made for it.
Macintosh operating systems are generally simple to choose between -- you basically get the newest one. But when an operating system is as new and different as Mac OS X, released in March, things get a little more complicated, but not much. As long as it's 8.6 or newer, the operating system that came with your computer is fine. If it's 7.5 or earlier, it may be time to get a new machine. If it's between 7.5 and 8.6, try upgrading at least to 8.6. Until OS 9, all iMacs came with 8.6. Then they came with 9, and now they come with X. So those are your basic choices. But if you have to choose between X and an earlier version.... You'll have to know this: OS X is based somewhat on Unix (it's actually based on something that is based on Unix). Therefore, it's generally incompatible with "Classic" programs, AKA those made for OS 9 or earlier, usually OS 7.5 to 9. But no fear - OS X allows you to run in a "Classic" environment, where you can run Mac OS 9 apps, games, etc. So why would there be any problems? They all come along when you want to run Windows programs. Previously, Mac users had the option of buying "VirtualPC" and similar programs, which allowed them to run Windows programs on the Mac. But there is no such program for OS X. And the one for OS 9 does not work under OS X's "Classic" environment. So - to ditch Windows or not to ditch Windows? That's the decision you're faced with. Most likely, a version of VirtualPC (by Connectix) for OS X is on the way, but can we be sure? We don't know yet. And if it isn't, you're stuck without it. That's a risk you're going to have to be willing to take. |
