I got what I wanted here (Reply to this comment)

As expected, all of the advisors in electronics that I hate with a passion came to see me. Maybe all of you could read my stuff and form your own opinion, that way you could slap something together and call in an opinion.

And surfergirl7, nobody ever said that epinions had a policy about ownership. I bet epinions has no policy on ever actually using a product. I seriously doubt that any of you (surfergirl7, dkozin and radiowoman) even use the products that you write about.

If you dirt bags were not doing anything wrong, you wouldn't be here. So why are you here? And Ahab I hope that the NH you left made you happy. Feel free to drop by and leave one, I can always use the hits.

For anyone else that just so happens to read these comments understand one thing, I actually use and in most cases own everything that I write about. So you guys tell me, what would you rather read?

Anyone can read Sound & Vision magazine, get some information and slap something together. How come only advisors in electronics are calling me a jerk? I love the fact that I got you three or is it four? Bone heads here, it means I did my job and all of you did exactly what I want you to do.

And which one of you girls offered to re-rate me? How generous, but I think I'll pass.

I'm a jerk and I'm proud of it, better than a fake and scam artist. Hey stick around, and leave some comments on my other opinions and advertise what it is that you all do, since you don't like to state that in your own opinions, you can tell everyone from here.

All three of you can't touch me, and as a matter of fact, this is the beginning of me coming for you.

You'll see.

what's all that venom about in the other comments? I've noticed you giving "Helpfuls" to some really good pieces (not sure if any of them were mine), but there must be more to the story.

In any case, I'm glad you provided a reasonable explanation for the hideously "hot" sound of early CDs. I'm hoping SOME digital format will eventually approach the sound quality of a good LP. Do you think it will happen? Or HAS happened?

I'm listening to Greg Brown's "Covenant" CD as I write (via Rotel 855/B&K 202 and Pro 5/Cambridge Soundworks Towers), and it sounds pretty good, but there's still something in the sound that screams "digital."

If we increase the sampling rate 10x and the bit depth 20x, will we be there? Or is it impossible to digitize something that's fluid and reconstruct it accurately? I think about this stuff when I should be having sexual fantasies. I think I need help.

This promises more than it delivers. (Reply to this comment)

Based on your intro, I was expecting a discussion of specific cases where standard CD's fell short in delivering good sound. Unfortunately, while you describe the performance problems in very general terms (first CD's were mastered from same bright-leaning tapes as LP's, remasters sound better than originals, etc.), you do not bring up any specific early CD's that had audio problems.

Also, you are missing the topic here. The point of this is to educate potential buyers of CD players. There's very little in this review which will help the consumer with their purchase decision.

Great Job.... (Reply to this comment)

I just have one question. Is it possible that you can include the estimated costs of these newer formats? That's the only thing I can see missing so far, and it will definitely be a major factor for a lot of consumers when they consider switching. Otherwise, very well done. -mad

Mighty thorough there fella! I read the comment that sparked (I assume) this article. I agreed with you there and here. You have laid this out better than anyone I have read on epins ever and I believe much of the confusion needs to be cleared up.

I kept saying out loud what the next sentence was about previous to my reading it; I followed you fully. I am disappointed by your disdain for cassette, if I could teleport you to my living room I think you'd feel different (SONY TC-KA3ES + TDK MA-XG 90/Sony Super Metal Master), but certainly your statements are true and valid.

I remember the 3" very well. They were wildly popular among my friends, though most of mine ended up as coaters. Those business cards are a trip though! I just saw one for the first time about a year ago. Course back then, a good tape was only about $7 when the CD singles were still $10 or so, obviously that changed, they went away!

I imagine you have some Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab recordings in your collection. And hey, why not? Even today one can hear the difference, and in 1991 it was like a slap in the face that your CD player could actually sound that good (the Sony home 10-disc units had been out for 18 months, for reference).

This is classic SS, outstanding! I look forward to the rest of this "series". I promise, I will do my best as an electronics advisor to provide only factual information:)

BTW, I have just a few words to end with...DVD-18 and blue laser technology...hehehehe...drool

.

Excellent.

I'm really looking forward to this series. I was aware of the SACDs and the DVD-As, but not the surround discs--nifty.

Initially (early 90s), i read that the theoretical limit on a "dual-sided/dual-density disc recorded at 24 bit" would hold as much 18 hours of music. Any hope?

My guess...

Only Sony could hope to introduce the "second Beta" --superior product, but not as widely accepted.
