The Bottom Line The 1990's were the perfect setup for the new millennium. Let's all pause and wait to see if technology will take over or if story and characters will survive.

If I were to have a film festival of decades celebrating cinema from 1940 – 1990, my list would be entertaining, but only a start. To make the festival complete I would pull some of the movies from the 1930’s a few come to mind: The Wizard of OZ (1939); Gone With the Wind (1939); Mr. Smith Goes To Washington (1939); You Can’t Take it With You (1938); Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs (1937); Topper (1937) Etc. to name a few.

First here are my honorable mentions: Ghost (1990); Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991); Thelma & Louise (1991); Wayne's World (1992); Speed (1994); True Lies (1994); Toy Story (1995); Mission: Impossible (1996); Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (1997); The Truman Show (1998); There's Something About Mary (1998); Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999); The Blair Witch Project (1999); Being John Malkovich (1999).

1. The Silence of the Lambs (1991) – Definitely better than Liver with Fava Beans and a nice Chianti. There are moments in this movie where you truly believe in man’s inhumanity to man. This movie is the right mix of Director (Jonathan Demme), Actors (Sir Anthony Hopkins & Jodie Foster), and Story.

2. Pulp Fiction (1994) – I’ve seen this movie way too many times to not love it to pieces. It is more of an experience than a movie. Samuel L. Jackson has never been better; John Travolta makes a serious comeback.

3. Clerks (1994) – Director Kevin Smith can do no wrong. This movie is cheaply done in Black and White, but the thing that matters is there, the story and the acting, while not great, it is a good movie for a group.

4. Independence Day (1996) – An Alien ship blows up the White House. Every major city is destroyed and we must rise up to destroy the enemy and rebuild. I’d like to think we would be this heroic.

5. Titanic (1997) – Massive ship and massive movie and a love story that knows when to bow out of the way so we can watch the ship sink. James Cameron’s attention to detail and passion for this project is evident in every frame of film.

6. The Fifth Element (1997) – Bruce Willis is back once again to save mankind from evil, will he succeed will mankind survive. Not only do we survive, we get to do it in style with a laugh or two complements of Chris Tucker.

7. Men in Black (1997) – Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones are keeping the aliens who decide to stay on earth in Check. The super secret Men in Black have it all in check until we get a visit from a particularly nasty alien bug, bent on murder and mayhem.

8. The Matrix (1999) – The closest thing I have seen to a live action anime movie. Parts II and III are being shot simultaneously see this one first and avoid the rush. Action, romance and more action is only the beginning.

9. Sixth Sense (1999) – The kid says, “I see dead people” and I see Bruce Willis. M. Night Shyamalan and Bruce Willis make a great team. This director brings out the best in Bruce and Bruce delivers another solid performance.

10. Magnolia (1999) – You may be through with the past, but it might not be through with you. Tom Cruise in a small performance that proves he is as good as you think he is. As you ponder that remark “I am silently judging you”, this is just one of the great lines from this movie of stories and characters.
