Let's All Take Some of The Responsibility

The Bottom Line Come on people! If you don't want it in your life, eject it whenever it finds it's way in. It's the price of living in a free society.

As a songwriter I am very close to this issue. When I create a song I create it from a stream of consciousness and whatever comes out, comes out. I am expressing myself. I go back and refine that song until I get what I am looking for. During that entire process I never think of whom I am writing the song for, or who will listen to it. My primary goal is to make it good enough that everyone will be able to enjoy it.

An artist should not have to censor that expression, or change that expression based on what will or won't influence someone who is listening to that music. Sorry folks that's the price we pay for living in a free society.

I don't listen to Eniminem or whatever the hell his name is and I don't appreciate the media making me aware of what he has to say, I am not his audience and I will never listen to him. Oh, on second thought I do like one of his songs, but I can do without the rest.

I am responsible for what comes into my home and what my children listen to. I only have a daughter and I will tell you that I am involved in her life, I know what she listens to and I lead by example. That may help, but if it doesn't she can develop her own musical tastes when she is 18 and leaves my home. Until then I teach her that she has to take responsibility for her actions and it is my responsibility to make sure she lives by my rules, for now.

A saying comes to mind: "When they came to take the other guy I did not speak up, I did not agree with his point of view. When they came to take another I was still quiet. When they came to take me there was no one to speak out." I didn't get it completely right, but I think you get the idea, think about that folks.
