Do you really have 10 minutes to spare each day?

Written: Apr 29 '05 (Updated Apr 29 '05)
Pros:It's inexpensive
Cons:it takes 10 minutes to disinfect or 30 seconds to sanitize.
The Bottom Line: This is an inferior product. 10 minutes or 30 seconds is an unreasonable amount of time to wait.

Boy do I have a bone to pick with Clorox, the maker of Formula 409 Antibacterial Kitchen. I have been using all purpose Formula 409 for years and had no idea that it wasn’t really disinfecting my kitchen. When I saw the bottle for Formula 409 Antibacterial Kitchen cleaner I put it in my basket trusting that it would be a good product.

Once I was at home I was ready to clean so read the back of the bottle to see what to expect. The directions indicate to spray the product 6-8 inches from the surface and let sit for 10 minutes to kill the bacteria or for 30 seconds for general sanitizing before wiping with a cloth or paper towel. If you have sprayed it on a surface that food will be on wiping with water after cleaning is recommend.

I was extremely disappointed to learn that the product must sit on the counter for 10 minutes before it kills bacteria because that is a significant amount of time especially when you’re waiting. Like most antibacterial products, this one is hazardous to humans and domestic animals. Since I have 3 kids and an animal it means that I have to carefully watch the area that I sprayed for 10 minutes which I’m less than thrilled about.

The bottle warns that the product can cause minor eye irritation and I find that the smell does bother my eyes and nose some. The product should be avoided around eyes, skin, and clothes. Always wash hands after using the product.

The bottle indicates that the product can be used on stove tops, countertops, sinks, and tables and recommends to avoid surfaces that are painted, vinyl, varnished, or aluminum. Test a small area before proceeding if unsure.

Cleaning the kitchen table and counters is what I had got this product for and was very disappointed in the performance. My kitchen table often has dried on food on the table top, underside, and wood chairs. The product almost always had to be reapplied two or more times or allowed to sit before the food came off which was disappointing.

I was also disappointed with the cleaning of the kitchen counters. Usually 409 cuts grease without a problem for me so I expected this product to be equally capable but it wasn’t. I found the product more difficult to get out of the bottle, the fumes bothered my head, the scent was nasty, and I had to reapply when I shouldn’t have had to. I just don’t think I should have to soak the area and wait.

Because this product has been so frustrating in the kitchen I didn’t even bother to take it into the bathroom because I don’t trust the products ability to disinfect. I also think that the fragrance does smell more like a kitchen than a bathroom.

The bottle is 32 fluid ounces and is in a white plastic bottle with a yellow spray nozzle to represent the lemon fragrance. The nozzle has a choice of stream, spray, or off. The product does not come out of the bottle as smoothly as I would have expected. It has a long forward stream with a short width and I find that it takes more squirts to cover the space than other spray bottles.

The scent smells bad to me. It smells like chemicals with lemon on top to cover the smell. It doesn’t leave me with a chemical feeling, not a freshly cleaned feeling. The scent doesn’t linger long.

Overall
I do not recommend this product at all. I picked up a bottle of Fantastik antibacterial after trying this product and I only have to wait 10 seconds for the bacteria to be killed. I am disappointed with this product and wouldn’t recommend it to anyone because it’s inferior and wastes time.
