I don't know about you guys, but I'm not sure I'm ready for this. I think I liked the old emptiness of that spot.

I just took a look, and your picture isn't showing. The reason is because Homestead won't show .BMP files or .ICO files. GIF and JPG will show just fine though.
I am going to download your picture and try to convert it into a format that you can use. I will e-mail it to you.

I think my picture was down for a while too when the new Epinions came up. I wasn't using Hotmail album though. I seem to remember moving my photo to another provider as well.
Just another weird bug at Epinions I guess.

Hello Steph,
I checked your profile page and found that the link you are using does not point to a picture.
This is the link you have on your profile page:
http://www.homestead.com/stephs69camaro/files/steph__julie.jpg
If you enter that link into your browser window, you will see that homestead is unable to find the file.
You might have mistyped the file name or the account name. I recommend you start with Step #5 from Section 3 of this review. However, instead of uploading a picture, just look at your "Pages and Files" page and from there "View" the picture you want to use. When you view it, the correct URL will be in the address box of your browser.
Please let me know if you are not able to locate the correct URL for your image using the techniques above. I would be happy to e-mail you more detailed instructions if needed.

My biggest problem with my photo was the link..... (Reply to this comment)

...after epinions came back in its latest version in January. For some reason the link with the photos in hotmail album didn't work any more and my picture came up blank. No matter how many times I re-loaded the pictures in my album and then re-inserted the URL on my epinions profile page, it wouldn't take even though it had worked fine before the site shut down.
So I switched from hotmail to honesty.com, per ed_grover's suggestion, posted a couple of photos there, and it has worked fine ever since.
I never figured out why links to hotmail didn't work.
Good tips, Bret. Besides the CD option for the digital camera impaired like me, many one-hour photo places like the one in the mini-mall near my home now offer an option of either a "free" set of duplicate prints OR a "free" floppy with your photos on them. I always ask for the floppy.

I like seeing a face, though whose it is we really never do know. I just hope for most of us we are honest enough to either put up our own picture or one that is obviously not us (like our dog) I can do without pics of celebrities I don't know but think they look familiar! jo

That people usually like to be able to see who they're talking to. However, in a lot of cases, a picture can destroy the near perfect element of the internet. If people can't see you, they can only judge you through the quality of your work. If a person is very attractive, as you're reading the review, you're going to keep going back to their picture and, unless you're uncorruptable (very few people are), it's definitely going to have a major influence on how you rate them.
Excellent editorial though.

I have a question. I just recently created a Homestead page. I put the link to the picture up on my profile page and all I get is the box with a litte red x. Do you happen to know what I'm doing wrong ???

I'm glad the hosting worked. I took a look and that's a cute dog!
If I may make a suggestion, check out the online gif optimizer I mentioned in Section 2. I tried it on your image and think the file size could be reduce from 44,425 bytes (14 seconds to load) to 5667 bytes (1 second to load) without any noticeable change in picture quality.
Once you save the optimized image to your hard drive, you can just upload it to your homestead account as you did with your first one.
Regardless, I am very glad to have helped you get a profile picture up. Thanks for making the review worthwhile.

I hope it works! Remember that Homestead will be doing site upgrades on July 16 so your picture won't show for a few hours that day.
Also, our accounts will go from "Personal" accounts to "Personal Preview" accounts. The "Preview" accounts are still free but you are limited to 3 web pages and 8 MB of space. Neither of these limitations should affect anyone who uses Homestead just to host an Epinions profile picture.

It is wise to be careful. That's why I recommend taking both close-ups and distance shots. In my previous profile pic, you couldn't really see what I looked like. Others may want to do the same.
