Living in Japan, Amazon.com is how I maintain my bookshelf and DVD collection, and it certainly helps me send gifts to family members stateside as well.
It's rare that a company gets my juices flowing in such a way that I find myself unable to resist telling everyone how great they are. In fact, I can't think of an Internet company that ever elicited such a response from me.
However, after a scathing review of an internet store with horrible customer service, I tried to think of an internet company that had resolved any problems in a satisfactory manner. Amazon is the company that came to mind.
Granted, they're not perfect, and I'm sure they've had their off days, but I've been using them for over 5 years, and I'm consistently pleased with their service and support. That includes several years of several Christmas presents to several different addresses, all of which Amazon keeps track of for me, in case I need to use them again.
I also love they way they seem to know what I like. They do a great job with recommending products, and for me, it's most useful when trying to find a new book to read.
Most importantly, however, was the one dispute I had over shipping charges. I was told one price in the checkout and another price after my card was charged. One e-mail resolved the issue with an appropriate credit to my credit card.
Trying to get region 1 DVDs and books in Japan doesn't offer a lot of stores with great prices and great selection. Amazon consistently beats bn.com on total price and shipping and handling, and after updated my profile (rating the items I've received after reading/watching them), they're ready with another good suggestion.
YMMV, but for me, Amazon.com has a satisfied repeat customer.
(...as long as they don't really, really screw up.)
