The Bottom Line I think you should, but not as a bribe. The lessons of budgeting are important in their own.

I believe a child should have an allowance so as to teach about budgeting. I really don't think they are effective as a means of getting jobs done. I think children should be taught that because they are members of the family and live with the family there are jobs they are responsible for. They should not get paid for these. I believe in extra monetary gifts for jobs beyond the call of duty. For example, when I broke my ankle and couldn't take pain meds, my daughter (who is eight) waited on me all day and night. She was great and she did this for three weeks. I gave her 100.00 and a new bicycle. While this might seem excessive, it would have cost a lot more to have a companion or housekeeper come in. I wanted to show her that she was valued and that was separate from her usual allowance. I guess it really come down to what each family wants to do and the personality of the child involved.
