Long live Napster!

Written: Apr 16 '01
Pros:Extremely easy to use, easy MP3 access, fast service, tons of MP3
Cons:Not going to be around much longer :(
The Bottom Line: Napster is the King, for more than just pirating music. Let beginning artists have a chance too. And hey, downloading 1 or 2 CDs cant hurt :)

Who doesn't know what Napster is? In case you don't know, it is the best, in fact, dare I say the *only* way to get tons of MP3 music files on the Internet. Don't even know what MP3 is? MP3 is simply a form of music on the Internet. So when people say they use Napster to download MP3s, they mean music.

The best thing about Napster, of course, is that it has almost anything you could possibly want. From classical guitar music, to Christmas music, to Brittany Spears to Marylin Manson - you can find it on Napster. All you have to do is type in the name of the song you want, and/or the name of the artist.. and BAM, up comes loads of results. Then, all you need to do is click, and it starts downloading to your computer.

Probably the greatest thing about Napster isn't that you can get so much music, but also different versions. Napster is the best way to find different versions of songs, for example.. songs performed live, studio versions, songs covered by other artists... the list goes on and on. And Napster isn't just limited to songs, you can find fun things like TV theme songs, stand-up comedy routines, movie sound clips, and other things like that. All you need to do is search for it.

Whether you know what Napster is or not, I am certain that you're aware that it is a big issue in court. Reason being, since Napster allows just about anybody to download ANY kind of music (even songs not released, or full CD's for FREE), there is a big copyright issue. Many artists are very against Napster simply because there music is being downloaded by thousands for free, when they'd rather rip you off and charge $15 for a CD. Other artists, on the other hand, support Napster and what it does. It really helps new artists, because anybody who wants to put music on the Internet can do so simply by creating an MP3. It's that easy.

To put in my two cents about what I think of the Napster battle, I think that Napster should stay just the way it is. Why? Many reasons. Mostly, because I love getting RARE stuff online. This being live performances, and those little-known artists that are making their ground across the United States. Heck, even I have a few of my own MP3's floating around on there. I don't want to see an end put to all of that. And, honestly... Because pirating music will never stop, to put it bluntly. People will always be burning CD's no matter what, and even with the halt of Napster, there are so many "clone" programs just waiting to get their turn. There's no way to put an end, only a temporary slow-down. But Napster is too much of a great thing to just put the nail in the coffin on. Let it live, please... let it live.
