The Bottom Line Dollars don't equal distance, work on a consistent swing with a club that matches your style of play.

The drive is one of the most important aspects of the game, and just like the universe, it starts with a bang. If you want to lower your scores, you need to be able to consistently make good drives. Aside from all of the gimmicks out there, you need to pay attention to the length of the shaft, how stiff the shaft is, and how the club feels in your hands. The length of the shaft is probably the most important, the longer it is, the more club head speed you can generate to add distance. When choosing a club, get one that doesn't put you too far away from the ball to feel comfortable, you may want to consider a customized shaft if you are a more advanced golfer. Not all drivers come with a standard shaft length. Now that you feel comfortable swinging the club, you need to choose the right shaft. A good rule of thumb, if you swing over 100 miles an hour, you need a firm shaft. A normal shaft will flex when you swing the club, the idea is to give the driver head a little "snap" right before the ball is struck. If you swing too hard, it will force a slice or hook. If you, like myself, don't have a way of measuring this, go to the local golf shop and ask if you can test a new driver and ask them if they can measure the club head speed. They will do anything if they think you are going to drop $400 on a club, just grab an expensive one..... Shafts can be metal or graphite, I recommend graphite if you want a stiff shaft. Normal shaft composition is a matter of preference. Now that you have the proper length and shaft type determined, swing a variety of drivers and find the one that "feels right" when the ball is struck. Some like a heavy driver head, while I like a very light one. I don't really recommend wood heads, steel will work for anyone, if you need a stiff shaft a titanium head will make a big difference. It doesn't make sense to use a wood head with a stiff shaft, or titanium on a normal shaft. Additionally, there is nothing wrong with teeing off with a 3 wood if you are a novice golfer, you have to learn somehow.
