The Bottom Line: If you must, stay here for the convenient location.

| gaelkm's Full Review: Motel 6 Bakersfield Convention Center |
In contrast to our stay at the Residence Inn by Marriott, the Motel 6 we stayed in was really barely acceptable. I must say that I have stayed in quite a few Motel 6's and this one was definitely below par, even by Motel 6 standards. The location was good, being actually within walking distance of the Residence Inn by Marriott we stayed in the night before. It was closer to the freeway, to be sure and several restaurants, including a coffee shop. A gas station was also very near. Very busy area.
Centrally located in Bakersfield, California, this Motel 6 is just a 3 mile drive from Buck Owens Crystal Palace and 7 miles from Bakersfield Airport. Also just a few miles from other local attractions, such as Rockin Rodeo, Pioneer Village, Kern River Park, and Lake Ming and plenty of shopping and restaurants are nearby too. It is approximately 3 miles from the Convention Center, which is two blocks from the Amtrak Station.
The address/location is:
Motel 6 Bakersfield
Bakersfield, CA, USA #1322
exit at SR 99/SR 58 at California Avenue
(661) 327-1686
The entire Motel 6 property was just a little less than well kept. Funny thing is that I observed several employees running around doing their work, but maybe it was just the fact that it is a very busy place, usually completely booked and definitely showing signs of wear and tear. There was a pool out front, basically in the center of the parking lot, but it looks a lot better in the photo than it did in person. There was no one in it when I observed it.
Our room, #103, was located right in back of the lobby. The parking lot was grungy looking, you know, when you see a lot of oil on the driveway and little bits of litter blowing around. Well, we got into the room, and at first glance, all seemed okay. Then I started looking closer. They had assigned us a handicap accessible room, which is fine, but the bathroom tile did not look clean to me at all. There also was no vanity surrounding the sink area, so pipes were visible beneath the sink. The pipes had bits of tape and insulation material hanging off of them too. Not a pleasant sight. I got a chance to relax and reclined on the bed. Looking up at the ceiling, I immediately noticed that the normally cottage cheese type ceiling had a large portion in the center that was completely smooth, as if some major repair work had been done there. It was about 6 feet in length and 3 feet wide, roughly about the size of a large man. (Maybe a big guy from upstairs had fallen through at some point!) There were also a couple of holes in the walls where something had previously been hanging and a spare nail poking out near a corner. A few cigarette burns here and there completes the picture you should be getting by now. The only saving grace was the carpeting, which surprised me as being in fairly good shape and clean as well. We watched a little television, which was small, but worked just fine. I actually slept pretty well and the bed was surprisingly comfy.
The price was right at least, since we were booted out of the Residence Inn by Marriott, because of a reservation mixup, we paid only $38.99 at this Motel 6, Bakersfield. There was coffee available in the lobby from 6-10 am. (Also, there is never a continental breakfast at a Motel 6, that I know of.) Our check in was the slowest on record, really no fault of theirs, but just thought I'd mention it. What should have taken 5 minutes to check in took 20 because of some computer problems, adding to my irritated mood.
I must say, from my experience staying at so many Motel 6's there are subtle differences. This was one of the poorest places I've stayed at and I would not go back unless there was no alternative.
