Re: Dealer? (Reply to this comment)
by mkaresh, in Cars & Motorsports
I've been writing reviews since long before I had the website, and this review is not written any differently than it would have been if I didn't have the website. The website complements these reviews by providing information that cannot practically be provided within the reviews.
In general, people make this complaint when they don't like the review. If I was simply pushing the website, wouldn't I simply praise every car to the heavens to make everyone happy?
Based on your comments, I'm going to guess you drove the A3 with the standard suspension. As my review notes, the sport suspension makes a large difference in this car. I also was not happy with the handling of the standard suspension.

Keep in mind that it's not always about dollars and practical things. But in that vein...
1. The A3 has stability control. Does the Mazda3?
2. The A3 comes with free maintenance for 50,000 miles.
3. The Mazda3 has some pretty mixed crash test scores (side is bad). The A3 will likely perform well as a new design that is from Audi. The Audi also seems to be built stronger based on what I've read, and it's heavier, which would indicate that.
4. Factor in resale value. Audis I've tried to buy used are always too costly to be a good value. A sign they hold their value well. Can't say the same about Mazdas historically.
5. Toss in intangibles like dealer service, image, styling preferences, solidity, etc.
All of the above add up to the fact that the car seems fairly priced for what you get. Some cars perform technically well enough but are boring to own. Others are almost partially seen as art objects. A base A3 is well equipped and good looking, and will drive off a lot for a little over $26,000. Loading up the options list is where, like most near-lux cars, the numbers stop making sense.
