What do you get the man who has everything for his birthday? Well, knowing how addicted he is to Monopoly, I found a couple of really nice wood boxed sets of the game, and then went on a search for Monopoly checks. Checks Unlimited had a really nice set of board game checks which included Monopoly. YAY! They even had the matching address label and leather checkbook cover. Score.
To add to my glee, I found a flyer in the Sunday paper for a killer deal for first time customers. I was able to input the code to the online form and the discount took easy as could be... but I'm getting ahead of myself, as I have a habit of doing so often....
The Checks Unlimited website is very easy to navigate. From the front page you can browse through personal checks, business checks, computer checks, covers, address labels, ID Theft guard,or business cards. They also have various colorful items in the main page which can lead you to various special sets. They have Disney Classics, Harley Davidson, Mountain scenes, Beach scenes... just a ton and I ain't counting them for ya. heh.
The last time I went to order checks for myself, I was on a hunt for Medieval.fantasy themed checks and nobody had them back then. I wrote to several of the on-line check places requesting some be designed. Checks Unlimited then came out with Castle-themed Checks. How cool is that? So yeah, I am not personally a first time customer, but since these were for Tom's account, he was and we could take the discount. I'm slick like that... heh.
Check out was about what I had expected. You need to have your routing and account numbers handy, what check number you wish to start at, name, address, etc... Now, this should go without saying, but some folks are none to bright so I'll say it anyway: For your protection they will only ship checks to the address that is on record with the bank. I used the Visa debit card to pay for them, and it was billed the day of shipping.
My total for 2 boxes of single checks, address labels, and the leather checkbook was $27.90, including shipping.
The first box of checks and the address labels arrived 12 days later, which happened to be the day of his birthday. Excellent timing, that. The leather cover with the Monopoly logo arrived about a week later, and a few days after that they sent me another two sheets of matching address labels (free).
I am quite pleased with the quality of all items that we have received so far. They're just cool as hell and fun! I hate boring old regular checks. I think they should mirror your personality. These do. The checkbook cover is soft black leather and embossed with little Monopoly tokens all over it, and has a colorful Monopoly Logo on the front bottom right corner. Love it. The labels have sufficient stickiness, unlike other labels I've ordered elsewhere that you have to freakin tape on. the checks are on regular heavy check stock and tear out easily.
Here's where we get into trouble. There were to be 2 boxes of the checks. Only one box arrived. The second box. The first box, which links from the old check number, has gone missing apparently.
I went to their website to inquire into the missing batch of checks, clicked on their own 'contact us' thingy (General@checksunlimited.com), and promptly got my email returned as undeliverable (User not known). This does not bode well. I then went to my original order confirmation (which gave me the total purchase price, but not a breakdown of the individual items) and responded to that address. This one was not bounced back, but I've yet to receive a response from them.
If too much more time passes I'll have to have Tom call them since it's his account, but he hates to do that since I did the actually ordering and know what transpired and when. This is becoming a major pain in both our asses.
So. What to do with these folks. They have a huge selection and the quality is great, but from what I hear this is not the first time they've had checks go to the wrong person. We're hoping this is not the case this time... I'm going to go with a middle of the road 3 stars at this point and not recommend that you use them. At this point, it's just too flakey. If this problem with the missing box of checks gets resolved, I'll be back to update...
For now, stay away from them.
Update 6/12/05
We've received word that the missing box of checks was returned to them damaged somehow, so they are reprinting them and shipping them back out this week. Odd, that, but I'm changing this to a tentative recommend. Love the product, still a bit iffy on reliability of delivery though.
