Carmax has a rude salesman (Reply to this comment)
by bomag
This is the worst experience I have ever had. My wife and I have thought about trading Either our Corvette or Expedition for a more fuel efficient vehicle and thought we would check out what was on the lot to see if we might like anything. I was stopped at the door before I could even look at the first car by a pushy salesman named Justin at the Carmax in Knoxville Tn. I told him multiple times were just wanted to look around and that we had been there before and did not need to here all about carmax, and look at thier reject car etc. After trying to walk away multiple times and him following or stepping in my path, I asked him to leave me alone and just let me look. I was informed by this extremely Rude Kid that "If I did not want to hear what he had to say I could just leave". I did just that I left. I have never been so insulted in my life! He is the rudest individual I have ever met. One thing for sure I will never do business with them. I can walk onto any car dealership in Knoxville and no one will hassel me. Most dealer ships acutally want to please the customer, evidently carmax just wants to run them off. And on a side note I just signed paperwork today on a 2005 Ford Explorer with a Local Ford Dealership. I went in today, looked around told the saleman I was just looking and he told me to look him up if I had questions and he went on. I found a vehicle I liked we talked came to an agreement and he sold a vehicle.

CarMax Lemon (Reply to this comment)
by calsquared
We bought a custom van from CarMax in late June . The van has been in the service department 32 of the 70 days we have owned the van. We have tried to negotiate with the service/operations people at CarMax to buy back what we believe is a LEMON to no avail. The problems with the van have included the following: seat belts that do not latch, AC compressor that had to be replaced, transmission that was poorly repaired prior to our purchasing the van that had to be repaired again, electrical surges in the dashboard that burned out the radio and caused other issues, and on and on. Did they check out the vehcile throughly? NO Are they treating a repeat customer fairly? NO Would I ever purchase another vehicle from CarMax? NO NO NO Will this probably lead to legal action? YES Consider this your fair warning - BUYER BEWARE Do not be lulled into believing their advertisements. This is not what how car buying should be.

CARMAX Service Warranty (Reply to this comment)
by cesardm
I am having problems having CARMAX to honor their warranty commitment. My son bought a car six month ago (October 2002) that has been in the shop for more that three months. Every time it has been there unusually long. The last time the car was taken they told us that an Inspector decided that the transmission had been abused and that would not cover the repair. I am trying to have this decision reversed. My son uses this car to go to work and school only and never had a moving violation. I spoke with the service manager who told me that the warranty company is not CARMAX. I asked him for a written statement of the reasons why they are denying to honor the warranty. Its been two days and have not received a response yet. I will keep a journal of this negotiation.

Thank you (Reply to this comment)

I visited CarMax the last time I purchased. Though I didn't buy my car there, I was impressed with their upfrontness and their integrity.
Their prices were definitely lower than the conventional dealers. I almost bought, but found a great deal from a private party which is the way I like to go because you know who had the car and get an idea of how responsible they are.

I'm really nervous about buying a car in the next few months, but you've really helped ease my fears. If you didn't get taken advantage of, this 22 year old female probably won't either.

I believe the website is www.carmax.com
That was probably just a spelling error.
By the way, I LOVED your epinion. It was so helpful. Thank you!

"fast-food car shopping" (Reply to this comment)

Great description. I've been curious about Carmax for quite a while -- I've invested in their stock (KMX) and it's done fairly well, even in a down market. This review explains why -- it sounds as if these guys have got a great business model.
Excellent review!
