Pros:Give the gift that keeps on giving … steel barbells.
Cons:You have to be pretty picky about the kind you buy.
The Bottom Line: Looking to get pricked or pierced? This is a great starter barbell that’s easy to clean, will stay securely closed and looks awesome.

When I made the decision to get my nipples pierced a long time ago it wasnt something that I just thought up, rant to a tattoo shop and had done. No, first I started out with my tongue and a few other basic body parts then moved on to the nipples. One of the first things people say when they find out this little tidbit about me is, That must have hurt like hell. Its sort of like childbirth, after it happens you sort of forget it. Since I was pretty new to the body piercing world but got a great introduction by fire I left the choice of jewelry up to the person that was piercing me. He pulled out two shiny silver things in these cute little packets and started telling me why these are the absolute best of nipples and tongues. Years later I still have them pierced and even though the whole body piercing fad has died out I refuse to take mine out. Its sort of like grunge music everyone was all over it when Pearl Jam and Alice In Chains were riding high on the charts but when something better came along everyone tossed their flannel and boots in the trash. Hey, that meant I got to clean up on used CDs
Steel 12 Gauge 5/8 Inch Straight Barbell
This is sort of a generic listing for this product because there are so many variables that go into it. The type of steel it is [general, surgical, treated etc], threading [internal or external], dual opening or fixed [if both sides screw off or just one] and how it is sold [sterile or common]. Most of the time when you buy these at a body piercing store or a tattoo shop that does piercings you will get something that is sterile or has been autoclaved. This means that it is safe to insert into a new or healed piercing without having the danger of bacteria being present. If you are going to buy one of these online you have to make sure that you read the fine print about how they sell their jewelry. If you are taking it some place to get pierced they should insist that the seal from the company be intact this protects them from a lawsuit and you from a trip to the hospital. If they dont care about the seal or if it has been sterilized then you should find another shop to deal with.
The most common type of straight barbell is the internally threaded one this means that the grooves are inside the ball rather than on the barbell so it is a little easier to get in and out of the piercing. Most of the straight barbells that are on the market are for tongue and nipple piercings but there are some that are used for a Prince Albert [male genital piercing, also called a P.A.]. This is the sort of barbell that is stocked at almost every type of store that sells body jewelry; its a great size and is great for fresh piercings. The listing here doesnt say surgical stainless steel so its unclear if it really is or not but since most places have switched to this higher grade of metal to work with for body jewelry well just assume that they shortened the name to save space. Basically, thats all it is, a high grade stainless steel that is the same stuff that surgical equipment is made of. Usually this has to do with the grade of steel, how it is cut and rolled and that its first generation metal.
This size might be a little too large to use for some people when it comes to nipple piercings but you want to have enough room on the sides to clean it but not so much that it could get caught on clothing. The 5/8 inch length is ball edge to ball edge so you have to keep in mind that some of the actual space is getting used up by the balls. These are the kind that I have in my nipples and to be perfectly honest, there are times that I forget that I even have them pierced. They have given me absolutely no problems since Ive had them pierced and even though I have worn other pieces of jewelry in them, this style and size is the one that I go back to time and time again. Why? Simple they are easy to remove to clean, they still have a lot of shine to them [yes, after all these years] and they look pretty damn cool.
This is something that is really going to confuse someone that has never shopped for body jewelry before so Ill try to explain it as best I can. There are a lot of different ways to buy your body jewelry online, at a tattoo shop or even at the mall. If you shop online you can find these for a couple of dollars but you will want to make sure that you are getting something that is going to be worth it. Most places are selling high quality jewelry that is made by someone that they contract out to make specific pieces. If you go to a tattoo shop you are dealing with their overhead, a price mark up and whether or not you are a repeat customer if you are they might cut you a break on the price. The mall is probably the worst place to buy this stuff because you are going to get raked over the coals. When I purchased these they were about $11.00 [I converted it for you, nice huh?] each which wasnt that bad. Most places will charge anywhere from $15.00 to $25.00 for one of them. This is why shopping online is a lot better but you have to read the fine print to see if they are sterile, what their policy is on defective items and if you need to buy a certain number of them to get the price break that they advertise.
The Bottom Line
This is a great size to start out with if you are getting your first piercing it is easy to maintain, is large enough that it wont start to grow out [this leaves a nasty scar] and if you need to remove it to clean it or change it, you can put it back in easily. Youd be wise to shop around to get the best price on them but I highly recommend Pierce This 2 and Tongue Stud Online Store. Ive recommended these stores to everyone I know, customers and people who would stop by the shop to get some advice on buying replacement jewelry. If you are looking for a solid piece of jewelry for an exotic, erotic or oral piercing this is a great pick!
