Helpful but......... (Reply to this comment)

First I want to say that I appreciate the effort put forth by Soupcraze. The advice put forth obviously took time to organize and write. Most of the basics needed by the novice audiophile are covered in a way so as to not overwhelm but educate. I would want my wife to read it if she were to go buy a receiver for me without telling me first.
Having said that, I want to emphasize one of his (her?) points: Go listen for yourself. Bring music you like to listen to when you do. Bring your own speakers with you when you go if you want for crying out loud. I did just that for my latest purchase......You guessed it, a Harman/Kardon AVR 630. You can't make a sound judgment with out really testing. These things are too expensive not to.
Drat! Now I have to write a review of the HK AVR 630 don't I??
Thanks again Soupcraze.

One more thing... (Reply to this comment)

Excellent, understandable advice! Would like to point out that there is a significant difference between the various encoding techniques. Dolby Pro-Logic creates 5.1 channels by matrixing or "blending" the right and left channels. This "creates" a center channel and a limited frequency, mono, rear or surround channel. Dolby Digital or DTS is distinctly different in that there are 5 true discrete signals, from recording to playback. The difference is considerable on DVD playback and worth the upgrade if your receiver supports only Dolby Pro-Logic
