Pro and Con of subscriptions

The Bottom Line Both options have their good points and times as well as bad.

I have been an avid reader most of my life thanks to my
grandmother who was a teacher. She taught me to read while
I was still quite young and started me off with OLD readers
from the days when she was a teacher (none of the boring
see Spot run garbage that I had to deal with once they
decided to "teach" us to read in school.)

I rotate my magazine subscriptions randomly as my budget
and topics of interest change, and I also like to read
through the paper.

While I lived in England, one of my interests was my home
town paper (which I of course couldn't pick up at the news
stand.) I checked into a subscription and was told that
I'd have to pay an extra $12 a year for postage as I lived
overseas. I was stationed overseas as an active duty
member of the Military so I had an APO address which means
that postage to me was still domestic US rates and NOT
overseas. I explained that to the subscription department
only to be told that "It dosen't matter. The paper is
STILL being sent overseas so that's the rate you have to
pay."

Outraged by this I sent a nasty letter to the editor and
did a search on line.

Immagine my suprise when I found the same "Paper" on line
and best of all...It was FREE!

There are several good things about on line reading vs
subscriptions.

1. On line saves paper and energy thus becoming environment
friendly.
2. No postage to pay so the cost is reduced for those you
to which you still have to subscribe on line.
3. On line only takes up VIRTUAL space and not
coffee table and magazine rack space... thus reducing
clutter.
4. No annoying "renewal" offers in your "Snail mail box"

On the other hand... (there are more fingers! bad pun I
know but couldn't resist ;)

1. You can't line the bird cage with "virtual" papers.
2. You can't get a streak free sparkle on your glass with
an on line paper.
3. You need an EXTREMELY smart and dexterous dog in
order to "fetch" an on line magazine or paper.
4. It's a BIG hassle to read an "E-ZINE" or paper
while on the "throne"

Printing off the good parts will allow scrap booking
and "Throne Room" but they still won't get the same
sparkle on the mirror or windows and it may end up costing
more in ink and printer paper than a subscription.
