Commuter students need to bring things with them, too.

The Bottom Line Even if you're living at home and commuting to school there are some things you should always keep in your car when going to school.
You might find this a little strange seeing as I'm a commuter student and I'm writing an opinion in the What Should I bring to School section but there are things that commuter students should take with them.
Obviously you're going to need your school supplies and books and the like. I don't think I really needed to tell you that but I figured I'd try and cover all my bases. :)
Where I'm going to school in Maryland both ice and snow storms can pop up very quickly in the winter. Being stranded anywhere without a change of clothes is no fun. Always keep an extra change of clothes in the back of your car in case you end up staying the night at school during a storm or emergency of some sort. And while you're putting your extra clothes into your car while not put in some toiletries? Things like travel sized bottles of shampoo, toothpaste, and even shaving cream could come in handy on those unplanned overnights.
Quarters. Most people tell you to bring quarters for laundry but for commuter students like myself I'm talking about vending machines and payphones. Many times I've come across vending machines with jammed bill slots which is a huge nuisance when you're starving, so having quarters, or any other silver change, is a good idea. And for those who don't have cell phones or don't like carrying one around, quarters come in handy when making phone calls.
You might think I'm silly for this, but I'd suggest keeping a small broom in the backseat of your car. It's much easier to sweep debris and snow off your car with a broom then it is to use the sleeve of your jacket or the scratchy plastic ice scraper. I know I can't stand it when I open my trunk to put my books or bag in and a bunch of snow or leaves comes tumbling in with them.
If you wear contacts you might want to keep an extra pair of contacts or glasses in your car in case something happens to your eyes. Having had both allergies and eye infections myself, it's nice to know that you've got an extra set of lenses in the car so you can see to make it home.
A jacket, blanket, and umbrella are also good things to keep in your car when commuting to school. The jacket and umbrella because you never know when the weather's going to change. And the blanket in case you decide to have an impromptu picnic lunch on the lawn on one of those wonderfully sunny days when you just can't stand being cooped up inside.
And of course don't forget a small box or bag of fun stuff: good driving music, a deck of cards or book or pretty much anything that can keep you occupied between classes since you don't have a dorm room to go chill out in. And a beach ball. Don't ask me why, but there have been several situations where I would've loved to have a beach ball with me. It's just one of those things I think everyone should have in their car or house. Plus a disposable camera to take pictures of all your new friends who live on campus that don't have a car who always beg you for rides to the movies and restuarants ;)
I know this category was intended for people living at college, but those who commute also have essentials that should be brought with them as well and so far I haven't come across one yet, which is why I decided to write this. If you think this epinion is misplaced or way off the mark, please let me know. I was just hoping to write something that might possibly help other commuter students, like myself, be prepared for college life :) Thanks for reading!
