The Computer Holy War Rages On
Jul 12 '01
The Bottom Line The battle rages on... And on... And on... But let's leave the stereotypes. Read my 'Conclusion'.
I'll admit it, I used to be a Mac Hater. I used to have one of the largest anti-Macintosh sites on the net. however, I'm not a computer nerd or junky or anything... Just a normal user. I use only PCs at home. But finally, I've seen the true sides of PCs and Macintosh computers, here's what I found:
-Macs Crash More... Right???-
*That's the largest stereotype with Macintosh computers today. For example, this would be true a few years ago. I knew people who had Macintosh Performa (Performa was the model I think...) computers. They constantly froze... They froze on and on and on and on... Etc... My older PCs never crashed either. For example, the computers that ran entirely on DOS were fail-safe. It seemed that Mac OS was simply an unstable system. Well, I've now seen the newer Mac computers in line. I used many of them. From the iMac to the iBook, to the Power Book, to the G4... And so on. I never had problems with them crashing. They were incredibly fast computers. I tried out the Dual Proccessor G4 model, and it was lightning fast... It handled like a charm. I've used a lot of Macs today. They don't crash anymore, yipee!
-PCs Never Crash-
*Unlike Macintosh computers, PCs that use Windows OS are built by numerous brands, such as Gateway, Dell, Acer, Compaq, Hewlett-Packard, etc... So, that's just another myth. There are good ones and bad ones. For instance, I used to have a Pentium I Dell that crashed every day, even multiple times in a single day. Today I use a Dell Dimension 8100, and it never crashes. I used some models that crashed, and some that were nearly invincible. For example, I haven't had the best experiences with Hewlett-Packard, but I did have good times with Compaq, Gateway, and Dell. So, do your research. Computers ain't perfect...
-Macs Run Less Programs Than PC-
*Another myth. First of all, that is true to some extent. For example, currently, more games run on the Windows platform. However, you can put Microsoft Windows on Macintosh computers. So, then you can run PC programs on Macintosh computers. However, Macs are better than PCs in graphic design, and another field that I'm very interested in.
-Make Your Own DVDs!-
*There are DVD programs for both Mac and PC. This means that if you have a DVD-RAM drive (You can make your own DVD discs), you can turn your home videos into digital DVD discs. This is no joke! I have tried out two different programs on two different platforms. One was on the Macintosh G4, and the other on a high end Compaq. Well, using the program on the G4 was so incredibly easy, I was able to do everything at the touch of a button! It was harder to do it on the Compaq. It was much better to do on the Mac. I currently have no DVD-RAM drive, but I may buy a Mac after college to create my own DVDs... After college, I should start making videos again. However, if you're very interested in this technology, maybe you should go with Macintosh.
-Ease of Use-
*Regarding installation, Macs are easier to install. Most Macintosh computers run mainly based on USB and Firewire ports. Oh yes, most come standard with Firewire ports. Connecting a PC is more difficult, but it's a one time job. However, I disagree that Mac OS is easier to use than Windows. I use Windows ME, and I find it much easier to navigate through than Mac OS. So, if I bought I Mac, I would probably get Virtual PC for it.
-Speed-
*There is no definite computer that's faster than the other. Computers are constantly being upgraded. Well, the fastest computer that I ever used was the Dual-Proccessor G4. However, my Gateway Performance 1500xl isn't too far behind. It seems that Macs run programs faster on average. We're talking about seconds though. Speeds are very comparable today. The Intel Pentium4 and III chips are very fast, and so is the Motorolla G4 chip. Both Macs and PCs will get the job done... Fast enough for any user.
-Hardware-
*Both computers can use the same kinds of hardware. However, Macs use mainly USB and Firewire hardware, while many PCs still use parallel ports. What's under the hood? Power. Power is under the hoods of both Macintosh and PC computers. If you really need it, you can for instance get a 100GB hard drive on a PC, as well as on a Macintosh. They all use similar components... There really isn't a difference, except for the OSes and the proccessors.
-In Conclusion-
*It's up to you to decide what's better. I actually like both PCs and Macs now. But, if you're into developing DVDs or are into graphic design, a Mac may be a better choice than a PC. However, a PC can handle more programs. But remember, you have to go with what you like more. Both are good computers.
