I had hoped to only read and rate today, but as I read and rated an opinion on this topic, I just had to add my two cents. In my lifetime I've written hundreds of songs and whenever I have a problem coming up with a song, I listen to music, I listen to the radio, I play CD's I immerse myself in the enjoyment of what I am striving to create. Not to copy it, or try to create another version of the same old song. I listen to what I enjoy listening to and I find it eaiser to focus on the task at hand. I've heard that this is a technique the Beatles used when they created one of their albums and I've been doing it ever since. I even listen to some music and performers that I normally would not listen to, these days all I have to do is listen to the top ten on all the Billboard charts and it always helps. Sometimes I will read Rolling Stone and scribble song ideas and title ideas on the pages and go back later and get some pretty good ideas. I am working on an album now called "Finding My Voice" I am 40 years old and in all that time I've written a lot of songs, collaborated with other songwriters and had several of my songs critiqued. I entered a song contest and I got an honorable mention, which to me meant that I was close, but no cigar. Now as I write the songs for this album, it's as if I have found my voice and as I write the lyrics and sing the songs I don't have to ask if they're good I know they are. I'm still learning with every song I write and with every song I listen to and hopefully when I put my MP3 links up for you guys to hear the fruits of my labors you will let me know if I've truly found my voice.  |
