Being a Lego junkie can be an expensive habit; there are older sets that can cost upwards of $200.00; thankfully there are some sites that sell reasonably priced Lego elements that you can use to enhance existing sets or replace lost, missing or damaged pieces. When I started looking for pieces to fill in some bare spots in my ongoing castle project I came across a site called Baylit [bricks as you like them]. When I asked around everyone had extremely positive things to say about the site so I decided to check it out. Ill be brutally honest here, the site isnt filled with flash graphics or elaborate descriptions but you get what you order, arent raked over the coals for pieces and delivery is quick. They dont sell sets or instructions so if that is what you are after, look elsewhere but if you are searching for pieces to complete a set or enhance something - this is the place to go.
What I really love about the site is the owner is a Lego junkie; he operates the site to support his addiction, something that he freely admits to. If you are someone that has a huge Lego collection you might want to check over his want list of pieces - you might just have something that he is looking for. In that case you can do a swap or sell them to him outright. Ive placed more than a few orders with him and have never been disappointed with what Ive received. If you are going to check out the site please keep in mind that it is pretty basic but its easy to navigate through and find what you are looking for. You can search by a certain piece or a group like figures or weapons. I like to go through the entire list and use the find [the control + f key] key to go right to items that I am looking for. Most of the time I am looking for things that are castle related, in the Adventurers theme or stickers. I have no idea how often he updates what he has in stock but out of all the orders Ive placed - Ive never had him tell me that something was out of stock.
Prices are extremely reasonable too; outside of picking up sets on sale or clearance to get figures or certain pieces this is the most cost effective way to go if you need things like gold coins, skeletons, treasure chests, accessories or a certain type of brick. This was one of the only places online that stocked the cool black mummy cases that I needed as well as clear goblets. When you are going over the list of things that he has in stock some items are highlighted with a link, if you click on that a small pop up box comes up so you can see an image of the item - this is where it is really important to read the description because the image might be of a goblet but it might be yellow instead of clear. This makes sense though - why bother having five or six different photos when one will work for several listings. So if you are new to this type of site make sure that you read everything and if you have any questions email him to ask before you order.
Hes pretty open when it comes to payment options but most of the time I just grab a money order to pay for things. Ordering is pretty easy - just pull up the order form, cut and paste it into Word or Works and fill it out. Once you email him hell check to see if everything is in stock and give you a price for shipping. Do yourself a favor and print out your order too, that way you will have a hard copy of it so if something is out of stock you can make adjustments or pick something else as a replacement. If you are ordering a lot of stuff you should opt for the insurance in case it gets lost or something happens to it. That protects everyone and no one loses out. Hes usually pretty quick at getting back to people but if you don;t hear from him in a couple of days, email him to see whats going on - you never know when your email is going to get gobbled up by some cyber beast. Once he emails you back the ball is in your court - you send in the payment or authorize a charge and then your order is processed. Most of my orders arrived in a couple of days with a week being the most. This is quick service considering its just one guy doing all this although I think he might be enlisting the help of his son [also a Lego junkie] to help out.
If you are wondering what some of the prices are, heres a list of his current prices for some common items:
gold coins: .50 cents for 4 coins
red flame: .18 cents
clear challis: .30 cents
gray flacon: .40 cents
crystal formation: $1.00 - $2.00
soccer ball: $1.00
metallic gold key: $1.50
The Bottom Line
This is a no frills site but you get quick service, new pieces, great prices and you never get ripped off when it comes buying Lego elements. Ive had nothing but great luck buying from him and hes pretty flexible with his payment options. If you are a Lego collector and have never checked out this site you really need to. He stocks a lot of cool pieces, gets back to you in a timely manner and knows his Lego pieces. About the only downside is that I can never remember the site address so I have to go to Google and type in Baylit then go to the page. If thats the only complaint that I have about a site then you know that they are awesome to deal with. Those who are curious about the site can find it here: http://home.att.net/~baylit
As always, thanks for the read!
