Never have dish pan hands again!

Written: May 19 '05 (Updated May 19 '05)
Pros:easy to use, convenient
Cons:soggy and ugly on counter
The Bottom Line: I favor this wand but not the sponges.

I love using a soap wand. I have been using them for years and depend on them on a daily basis for quick little jobs. The wand is great when you only have one dish and don’t want to fill up a sink full of water. Actually even if I fill up a sink full of water I use my wand because I don’t like to put my hands in soapy water.

To fill up the wand simply unscrew the end and squirt your dish detergent in and screw the cap back on. The wand is clear so you can easily tell when you need to add more dish soap. To activate the sponge get the sponges wet and press the blue button a few times for more soap. Squish the sponge down a couple of times and you’ll begin to see the soap. The blue button for more detergent doesn’t really need to be pressed but if more suds are needed the blue button can be pressed.

The sponges are replaceable….when you can find them. I often have a difficult time finding replacement sponges so I grab a couple at a time when I see them. There are no replacement guidelines for these but I think you’ll know when you need a new one.

There are different styles of sponges by mine has a thin green scouring scrubby layer followed by a yellow sponge. The sponge stains easily so I avoid using it on things like spaghetti sauce. Food particles also get caught in the green section of the scrubber. For instance if I were cleaning an egg pan there would visibly be chunks of egg on the scrubber. I have not experienced such things with other types of wand cleaners.

The soap wand costs about $3 and the replacement pads are about a $1 each. I have found that I go through less water and dish soap while using the product. The condition of the sponge will reflect how often and what you use the product on. If you use it to scrub burn things off the bottom of a frying pan it will destroy the sponge in no time. If you use if for smooth things like plates it will last a lot longer.

It has been said by some (a.k.a my mom) that sponges harbor a lot of germs and the moisture allows bacteria to grow inside but I think it’s filled with soap and I’ll take my chances but I do squeeze it out after each use and stand it up to dry. I would not recommend putting it under the sink because bacteria will thrive in the darkness. So although it’s handy it doesn’t always look too nice sitting on your sink especially once the pad starts wearing.

I really love soap wands in general however this particular design isn’t very good. The biggest complaint that I have is that I have to store it standing up in the drainer otherwise it leaks water and soap all over my counter. Another problem I have is that I really hate the sponge attached. Unlike other brands this one doesn’t fall off but it gets tears in it. The sponges seem to stain and wear faster than other brands.

This is not my wand of choice but I do prefer it over a dish cloth!
