JCPenney as a department store is one of the all-time favorites because the merchandise fits my style, my budget, and I can easily return items to the brick and mortar store if needed.
What they Sell
JCPenney is a department store so you’ll find things like clothing, bed and bath items, housewares, shoes, jewelry. They also have a lot of things for the home like major appliances, small appliances, cookware, beds, bedspreads, furniture, lighting, furniture. They only sell first quality items and they’re always having a sale.
My Experience
I buy a lot of clothes at JCPenney and the odd thing about clothes is that they may not fit or look very good on. I usually get my husband’s Docker’s at JCPenney and have noticed that every time they’re on sale they’re out of my husband’s size at the brick and mortar store. I’ve started ordering them online to save not only the gas money but the hassle and frustration.
I also visit their site a lot in search for household items like curtains and rugs for the home. I’ve searched many local JCPenney stores and have been disappointed with either the selection or price. I have found that JCPenney.com has an outstanding selection and sorts them nicely. I am pleased to report that the JCPenney website divides window treatments by girls, boys, boy teen, girl teens, canopies, and more which is very helpful for me.
The website has an awesome new feature called "Window Design Center". It can be found on the left toolbar under the window tab. You can enter the size of your window, match your paint and floor and then experiment with window treatments. You can get a visual of what your windows would look like with a variety of drapes, curtains, sheers, valances, scarves and blinds. This tool can help inspire you. There's also a lot of information about how to choose your look under the "Window Solutions" link.
Another thing that I tend to do is browse their current Sunday circular advertisement which can be found on the menu bar. Things of interest can be added to the shopping list.
I also love to look through the online catalogs. They’re just like traditional catalogs except you turn the page with a click. To view the catalog just put your curser at the bottom corner where you’re normally find the page number and click to turn the page. Shopping from a catalog has always been more appealing to me than a traditional webpage and items from the catalog can be easily added to the online shopping bag.
Major Appliances
I have never purchased an appliance on their site but I’ve shopped around on there looking for a washing machine. They sell things like refrigerators, stoves, washer and dryers though there are only a few to choose from. Shipping for something like this is a week with a $70 delivery fee.
Gifts
Feel like a heel because you forgot a present for someone or just want to simplify things? JCPenney offers eCertificates for denominations as low as $10. The eCertificate will be mailed to the recipients email address within 12 hours and there’s no shipping charge or wasted time. A traditional gift card can also be ordered online and will arrive to the recipient a week later through the mail. The gift cards can be used for purchases online, in store, or by phone.
There’s also a gift registry for things such as graduation, weddings, and babies.
Shipping
I once preferred to drive to the local JCPenney over paying for shipping charges. That was before I had three children and car that guzzled gas. Today, $5.95 for shipping on an item less than $30 seems reasonable. Once you reach a higher price tag like 100.01 the price is $17.95. Shipping prices are determined by price not weight which can be a benefit or drawback depending on what you’re ordering. They use a variety of services such as FedEx, UPS, or USPS at their discretion. It will take 4-7 days for a delivery to arrive which is normal for internet sales.
Another option is to have your items shipped to the local brick and mortar JCPenney for pick-up. This might save you a whole dollar but will still take 4-7 days but is a good option if you don’t want your items sitting on your front porch. I tried the ship to the store option and ended up spending even more money in their store when I went to pick up the items. When I had my items shipped to the local store I had to pay with credit card at the time of pickup so I'm not sure how that would work if you were sending someone else to pick up your items.
Returns
Returns can be made at any time with the original receipt. Returns can be done at the brick and mortar store or through the mail. The buyer pays for return shipping unless the return is due to a JCPenney error. There are a few exceptions on the return policy for furniture, jewelry, electronics and appliances, and so forth. Check site for specifics.
Customer Service
JCPenney had stellar customer service. Most companies hide the phone number and contact information on their website by JCPenney has every question you could think of is neatly organized on their customer service page. http://www4.jcpenney.com/jcp/CustomerService.aspx?cmResetCat=true
The customer service reps are available 24/7 by phone or email. I have contacted customer several times for pre-purchase questions and have found them to be polite and knowledgeable. I haven’t had any problems with any purchases that I have received so although I can’t judge them on that it also does say a lot to not need to contact customer service.
Overall
Overall I’m very pleased with JCPenney.com website and think their shipping and return terms are fair. They have a very large selection of items and something is always on sale! I love how they have their site set up and if you’re not ready to buy you can save your virtual cart and come back to it later. Items on the site are quick and easy to find. Like JCPenney has been telling us for years, “It’s all inside.”
