You spend 1/3 of your life on this investment

The Bottom Line Spend a lot of time buying this long term investment. A little time now can save you years of back pain.

This is probably one of the most important investments you will make this year. Think of it that way. How many hours a day do you spend in your car? How many do you spend on your bed? If you're like most people, there's a staggering difference between these amounts of time. Now, how much time did you spend researching your last car? How much time did you spend test driving? You MUST spend as much or even more time when buying a new mattress.

Think of how you feel on a day after a bad night of sleep. Can you afford many days of this? When you buy a mattress it is a long term investment item. Plan on using it at least 10 years.

Many people buy a mattress by going to a store and laying down on a few beds and guessing on what one is the best for them. When they do this they are (usually) fully dressed, even to the point of not taking off coats. This is not how you sleep. Why would one consider trying out a mattress like this? It is most likely embarrassment at laying down in a store. When shopping, wear light clothes, sweats, t-shirts, shorts, or something close to what you may actually sleep in. This is going to give you the best feel of how the mattress will feel against you. Sweaters, sweatshirts, or jackets can easily hide a pressure point of where a spring may push against your shoulder or hip while laying on your side. You may not feel it while in the store, but you will definitely notice it at home.

Spend some time on the mattress you are testing. The average person sleeps six to eight hours a night, but spends less than 10 minutes on the bed they decide on. As your body relaxes while laying on the potential mattress you may notice that it does not feel as good as it did when you first stretched out. Do a complete body inventory with each test. Ask yourself how the mattress feels on each body part, from your head to your feet. Pay special attention to your shoulders and hip area. Pay extra special attention to your lower back. Lay in different positions. Most people do not sleep in only one position while in bed. You are eventually going to be tossing and turning one night, so do it now also, before you purchase. A bed that feels fine while laying on your side may not feel so good on your back. Do not plan on only taking a few hours to find your new bed. Plan on making it a day long event. This may seem tedious, but you can always try to make some fun of it. And trust me, it's worth it in the end.

Do not limit yourself to traditional mattresses. Realize that an innerspring mattress is still a 100 year old invention. Imagine driving around in a Model T. It may be nice, but would you want to do it every day? Air, water, and foam have become very popular mattress materials over the past 20-some years. I personally chose air because it gave me the best support. It is also something that can be adjusted individually for each person. Most couples do not agree on mattress firmness and compromise on one somewhere in the middle. This causes each person to actually not be sleeping on their personal preference of a mattress. These mattresses are also light weight and do not need to be flipped or turned, something which is good for people who have problems lifting heavy weight.

One final word of advise: Be careful when trusting a salesperson. He can only tell you his OPINION. This opinion may be based on how the bed feels, but it may also be based on how the sale will affect his wallet. Use the salesperson for guidance, but never let him tell you which mattress to buy. Get what is best for you, not someone else.
