The Bottom Line The above list represents what I would take if limited to 10 choices. Let's hope I never get stranded, because there are many great albums that I would miss.
It's tough to narrow this to just ten... but here it goes 10. Van Halen - Van Halen The first effort is sometimes the best, as in this case. VH revolutionized rock with a unique sound. Everyone who played guitar wanted to play like Eddie. This album contains no weak tracks and may be responsible for saving rock from the disco nonsense of the time. 9. Stone Temple Pilots - Core Whether you consider this metal or not... it rocks. STP is the closest thing to Led Zep the the 90's had to offer. From the in-your-face "Dead and Bloated" to the catchy hits "Plush" and "Creep", this is a must have. 8. Guns and Roses - Appetite for Destruction Cutting edge for its time, GNR capture the metal attitude better than anyone on this album. Too bad this band was so self destructive. Appetite demonstrated a great balance between the melodic and raunchy. 7. Tesla - Mechanical Resonance Great duelling guitars!!! With rockers like "Comin' At You Live" and "Modern Day Cowboy" balance by melencholy creations like "Changes" and "Before My Eyes"(my favorite song on the album) this is the best from any of the borderline hair metal bands. Jeff Keith's vocals are surprisingly soulful and melds well with the overall energy of the album. 6. Def Leppard - Pyromania You can't ignore this one. Def Leppard made metal melodic. Radio classics like "Photograph", "Foolin'" and "Rock of Ages" combine with hidden gems ("Die Hard the Hunter" and "Stagefright"). There is not one filler on the album. The commercial success of Pyromania paved the way for many others in the 1980's. 5. Black Sabbath - Heaven and Hell I like Ozzy very much. That said, Black Sabbath was a much better band with Ronnie James Dio on vocals. First of all, no one has a better voice... no one!!! The songs are excellent, the tempo is upgraded and Tony Iommi never sounded better. "Children of the Sea" and "Heaven and Hell" are awesome. "Neon Nights" and "Lonely is the Word" are pure power. The lyrics are great: from clever alliteration "Phantom figures free forever" to "the world is full of kings and queens that blind your eyes and steal your dreams... it's heaven and hell." 4. Queensryche - Operation Mindcrime Super story, lyrics and music. Geoff Tate is my third favorite metal vocalist (behind Dio and Dickinson). The lyrics are irreverent and introspective at the same time. You get sucked into the murderous tale. This is a masterpiece. 3. Dio - Holy Diver Excellent debut from the RJD and his super group. Vivian Campbell's leads are explosive. Vinny Appice is quick and distinct. There is so much power in this album. What a great exercise disc. Following the high energy "Stand Up and Shout" with the methodical "Holy Diver" is brilliant. It still sends chills up my spine when I hear Dio sing "I am darkness, I am anger, I am PAIN..." Once again... the voice, the voice, the VOICE. 2. Iron Maiden - Piece of Mind The quintessential pure metal album from the quintessential pure metal band. Great vocals, the best guitar tandem ever and the most audible bass player there is... this album is perfect. "Revelations" and "Flight of Icarus" stand out as the best of the great. Pure, honest metal with undying structure like classical music sets this effort and this band apart from all others. 1. Led Zeppelin - Physical Grafitti This is the father of all metal albums. Heavy metal would not exist in it's present form without this influence. Power, guitar effects, memorable riffs, thundering drums and piercing vocals... this is what metal is made of. "Ten Years Gone" makes me cry, "The Wonton Song" forces a head banging motion and "In My Time of Dying" makes my ears bleed. I bow the the almighty gods of metal. Led Zeppelin rules!!! |
