I have been using Avery Reinforcement Labels for years and years and ... well you get the idea. My mother introduced me to these labels when I was in school, and now I use them at the office.
Description
These Avery Reinforcement Labels are thin poly-vinyl circles with a center 1/4" diameter hole. The permanent self-adhesive circular label measures just over a 1/2" in size. The poly-vinyl material is durable, too, resisting rips.
Avery makes these labels in two colors: white with a slight glossy look (model # 05729) and clear (model # 05721). There are 200 labels in each cardboard box. Avery has provided a unique dispenser box. The labels come mounted single-file on a paper strip. The paper strip is threaded through the box so that when the label strip is pulled, the adhesive circles automatically peel from the paper strip. You dont have to pry the labels free. The box design does the peeling for you.
My Experiences
One annoyance, whether at school or the office, is when notebook pages start shedding from the binder. Not only does it look messy and unorganized (with the potential for losing information), but if at a meeting or when making a presentation, shedding notebook pages do not present a professional, polished image.
These circular rings are excellent to reinforce the 3-hole punched pages in notebooks. Since the poly-vinyl of these rings is very thin, they add little bulk to the pages. The rings neatly fit around the punched paper holes and prevent the notebook paper from ripping.
What if the hole in the notebook paper is torn? Try marrying the two edges of the torn hole together and place one of these permanent Avery reinforcement labels over it. If the paper is smooth, not horribly wrinkled, the label will mend the hole and keep it from further ripping. If necessary, you can apply an Avery reinforcement label to both sides of the paper. Normally this would not be necessary, but if mending a ripped page, two of these reinforcements may come in handy.
Perhaps you have a single-hole punch instead of pre-punched 3-hole notebook paper. These labels work just as well on custom punched paper holes just so long as the hole is 1/4" in diameter. We have tags with strings that we attach to product for identification purposes. On occasion, depending upon the situation, we will affix one of the clear Avery reinforcement labels to the tag to make sure the string does not rip through the thin cardboard. We dont do this all the time, but there are occasions where we know a tag will receive abuse so a little extra protection is useful.
The clear reinforcement rings are especially nice since they are see-through. If you have 3-hole punched charts, graphs or even pages loaded with text and little margin space, these clear labels allow visibility of material written on the pages.
The white poly-vinyl labels are excellent not only for using on white paper, but they also have design potential. Dont laugh. When in school, many of us enjoyed impromptu decorating with these plastic rings. The design potential is vast and only limited by imagination.
If needed, you can write or draw on these reinforcement circles with permanent marker. Marks A Lot and Sharpie permanent markers in a variety of colors work well. I have tried writing on these labels with ballpoint pen, but the pen does not print clearly on the poly-vinyl material.
So what if you stick a label where you dont want it? They are permanent, right? Well no need to worry. There are times where I miscalculated and placed a label so that I partially covered a notebook paper hole instead of surrounding the hole to add protection. Using the edge of a fingernail, I pry the misaligned label from the paper and am able to reposition it. However, I find I need to quickly do this or the label wants to remain affixed to the paper.
This poly-vinyl material is also rip resistant. Just a moment ago I sat here trying to rip one of these rings. All I managed to do was stretch it a bit out of shape. Its still circular but a bit wavy where I stretched the material.
Likes
* Poly-vinyl material is very thin so doesnt add bulk to paper
* Clear labels do not cover up information on the page
* Avery reinforcement labels are rip resistant
* Using permanent marker, you can write on the labels
* It is easy to pull the labels from the cardboard dispenser box
Dislikes
Not really a dislike, but it can be an inconvenience when using a lot of these labels. These poly-vinyl circles are mounted in single file along a strip of paper that pulls from the dispenser box. If using a lot of these labels, this strip of paper will grow longer and longer as the labels are peeled from it. I just rip the paper strip from the box when it becomes too long.
Sometimes it would be nice if these reinforcement labels were on a single sheet of paper rather than in the dispenser. It would make it easier to take a flat sheet of labels with me rather than the box. In case you are wondering, the dispenser box measures 3" wide x 3 5/8" high x 3/4" thick.
Purchasing
Staples and OfficeMax sell the clear reinforcement labels for $1.89 a box and the white labels for $1.09 a box.
Summary
I have used both paper reinforcements as well as these poly-vinyl Avery Reinforcement Labels. The Avery poly-vinyl material beats paper reinforcement labels every time ... no comparison. The Avery labels are durable and do not rip. I also love it that they are self-adhesive and easy to peel and stick to paper. These labels are a reliable way to keep notebooks looking neat and professional.
