Strange title huh? To satisfy curious minds Elvis is a rabbit and Scooby is a dog; just a few of the furry creatures that share the house with us. Weve got guinea pigs, rabbits, a huge parrot named Captain Peg Leg [he came with that name], dogs and a rather interesting assortment of reptiles. That amounts to a lot of poop to scoop, litter to change and food to dish out but more importantly - wires to protect. If youve never had guinea pigs, rats or rabbits then none of this is going to make sense. They love to chew - and theyll chew on just about anything and everything including wood, wires, computer cables and vacuum cleaner cords. Sure they all have their treats to snack on but if given the chance they will all go for an exposed cord, wire or anything connected to something electrical. Even Captain Peg Leg got into some trouble when he started hopping around on the kitchen counter and found the toaster something that he simply couldnt resist.
Our Dauchunds [Minnie, Scooter and Roxie] seem to get into trouble with wires. Roxie started chewing on a cord for the lamp in the livingroom and I was afraid that she was going to electrocute herself if she kept it up. Seeing as how the wire was white I couldnt use black electrical tape on it so I hit Home Depot to see if they had any white tape in stock. The only white that they had was in a five pack bundle so I figured that with a house full of animals eventually it would all be used. I picked it up and wrapped the exposed parts of the cord with the wire and that seemed to do the trick. For some reason these three dogs are either afraid of the tape or they dont like the taste of it because after I wrapped the cords up in this stuff, they wouldnt go near them. The other dogs like to tear stuff up around the house when they get bored and unfortunately one of the things they chose to play with was the printer cable. Thankfully it wasnt hooked up to the computer or the printer or they would have undoubtedly pulled both things off my desk. I had to use the white tape on this even though the cord is a light tan color but it still did the trick.
3M Assorted Colored Electrical Tape
This bundle comes in five colors; white, blue, red, yellow and green so no matter what you are typing to repair, chances are one of the colors will work for your needs. I had tons of black electrical tape around the house so I wasnt worried that this color wasnt in this bundle. In fact, I go though so much black electrical tape that I should probably buy stock in the company. I got this for $2.99 which I thought was a pretty good deal at the time. I went with the 3M name because I have always had such great results with their other products and that this could be used for items up to 600 volts. I doubt I have anything in my house that has anything even close to that but its nice to know that I can use this on an extension cord until I can go and get a replacement.
Each roll has twelve feet of tape on it so there is more than enough to tackle several jobs, even when I had to wrap up the cords on the vacuum cleaner, there was still enough left over for some other small jobs. This comes off the roll easily and does have a good bit of stretch to it. This means you can really wrap things tightly and it wont start to pucker or peel off after a few weeks. Thats one of my biggest complaints about electrical tape; if you buy the cheap stuff it starts to dry out or it doesnt cling to things as tightly as it should. I like the three quarter inch size because its wide enough that I can wrap things diagonally but not so wide that it is hard to work with. The core is made of thick cardboard so even when I am down to the last few inches of tape I can still hold it tightly without worrying about it collapsing or giving out on me. So far I havent had any problems with this tape and chances are when I run out of this I will buy the five pack again or at the very least try to find a few extra rolls of the white!
The Bottom Line
I think all of the animals know that when they see me reaching for one of these rolls they know I mean business. No matter how many times I correct them or chase them away, when they have the chance they cant resist sinking their teeth into a cord. Now that I have this electrical tape I can repair some of the damage that they do and I can try to match up the colors as close as possible. My animals arent monsters that destroy everything in sight but if left alone for more than a few hours they do tend to get restless and the rabbits manage to find a way to break out of the kitchen and hops all over the place - taking little tastes of everything along the way. Still, spending $2.99 on a product like this is peanuts compared to the companionship that I get from all my furry little friends. It allows me to make small repairs and ensure that things are still safe and I dont think a single one of them likes the sound of the tape coming off the roll.
As always, thanks for the read!
