About Me: I am a photojournalist working out of the Big Island of Hawaii.

Gives me itching to no end

Written: May 31 '05 (Updated Sep 14 '07)
Pros:Cleans clothes well, convenient since Downy is built-in
Cons:Causes allergic reaction (itching), too much foam in rinse
The Bottom Line: Avoid this product. If you need fabric softener just use Downy separate, which is still a Tide product so it's not like they're losing money.

I've used Tide liquid detergent for many, many years. I've had good results with regular Tide, Tide with Bleach Alternative and Tide Free. So when I saw Tide with a touch of Downy (T.W.A.T.O.D.) I thought, "Hey Great! I don't have to add Downy."

So I had been using it for about a month and during that time I had itching like hives. I couldn't figure it out at first as it is mosquito season and I did have some mosquito bites and I have a cat so fleas could be suspect. Because I thought it was bug related I re-washed everything possible to clean things. Little did I know that I was only making things worse as I was washing with T.W.A.T.O.D.

I would scratch my itchy hands and feet raw and wash them in antibacterial hand soap for relief, but then I of course was drying my hands with a towel that had been washed with T.W.A.T.O.D. This only made things worse. Sleeping was tough at night with all the itching as it seemed to be worse at bedtime.

I finally did a search on the internet and found my answer right on Tide's website forums where others complained about itching. Something about the enzymatic formula in T.W.A.T.O.D. triggers allergic reactions.

I say steer clear of this product. I've used the other Tide products and separate Downy without the itching problem but this combo detergent is no good. Many others on the Tide forum also complain about too much foam in the rinse which forces them to run clothes through the rinse cycle twice, I agree.

The other reason to avoid this is even if you aren't allergic to this product if you snuggle up with a loved one who is allergic they might think you've got fleas or something. You wouldn't want to have your date suffer an allergic reaction to you as it's a relationship that wouldn't last long. Or if you have visitors over and they come into contact with your linen, bath towels, etc.

If you don't believe me do a Google search for the words: tide with a touch of downy itch
