The Bottom Line This is one of the specialty insurances. Before getting it, make sure you need it and it is cost efficient.
Pet and Livestock Insurance is actually two separate although similar things. I will cover each in turn.
Livestock Insurance
Livestock insurance was specifically created for horses and other farm animals. This includes horses, cattle, chickens, goats, etc. It does not cover pets even if they are on the ranch with the other animals. For instance, if a tornado kills the family's dog and prize winning steer. The steer could be covered but the dog could not. This type of insurance covers acts of God including lightning and tornadoes, natural causes, fire and acts of individuals other than the owner or employees. It also does not cover the animals if they are being destroyed for humane purposes. This insurance is used almost exclusively by farmers and ranchers. One notable exception is that zoos occasionally use this type of coverage for their animals.
Pet Insurance
Pet insurance is the one that more people would probably find useful. Pet insurance is quite similar to a combination of Life and Health insurance for pets. In most cases, this covers all costs minus deductible and out of pocket expenses for accidents, illnesses and health related surgeries. Since these surgeries can be extremely expensive, this can really help out.
Remember that any non-emergency items are generally not covered. These items include regular vet visits, spaying or neutering (unless it is for health reasons), etc.
While generally less than a similar policy for humans, pet insurance is not cheap. Generally, it would only be used if there were any particular reason to get it such as if the pet is predisposed for one particularly expensive type of treatment. An example would be the Great Danes that are predisposed to hip problems.
If you feel this would be something that your pet would need, you will need to find a specialty insurer. Searching for pet insurance on the Internet will probably yield what you want.
