Without A Shadow Of A Doubt

Jul 17 '01

The Bottom Line Choose understated colors . The darker ones will usually make your eyes too dark .

Eyeshadows can be tricky today . They are not used to really shadow the eye . More like illuminate them . I have learned several tricks to applying and choosing shades of shadows . However , I will stick to the one I always fall back on .

I think even the best of us have made shadow mistakes in our lives . It is inevitable . I also think it can be a mistake to wear the same shade shadow wherever you go . You need a different look for nights , office , and play . No matter how pretty your eyes are , people around you constantly can and will get used to them if you keep the same dreary routine .

Eyeshadows come in three different " dry " types . There is the iridescent that is exactly what it sounds like , matte - what it sounds like too , and metallic . Metallic colors are an odd sort . Other than pearl whites , I steer clear of these . They probably would be cool for Halloween , but that is about the only use I can think of .

The matte shades are better for a more professional office look , while the iridescent shades are flirty and fun . I try not to mix these and as far as brands go , I do not have a favorite . I use them all .

Then you have the " wet " makeup . Unless you have gone to beauty school , or have tons of extra time to play , I think these are real losers . They smear instead of blend and go basically into that Halloween makeup category to me . I can use them and apply them with pretty results , but the over all effect is time consuming and can be achieved just as pretty with the " dry " shadows .

On choosing a color , I think most of us feel comfortable and look good in the varieties of the brown shades . For those of you hung in blue - it's out . Loooooong gone . Even when it made a come back a few months ago it left with a staggering hurry . There are really few people who can pull off the blue shades . I think the main reason it is accepted at all on models is that we have the general idea they are supposed to be pretty in what ever they put on .

Mauves are also a mistake for most women . I am sure there are some who can wear it with wonder , or they wouldn't make it . For the most part , when I see a woman in mauves it reminds me of an eye infection . To say the least their eyes look inflamed . Unless you know for a fact these look good on you by several compliments from people who have no reason to suck up - take another color scheme .

When choosing a color , other than the two specified , be adventurous . Don't be afraid to ask people you can trust what they think . This is sometimes the biggest help there is . When I try new shades it takes some time to adjust to them leaving my confidence low until I get a compliment . So, ask away if you are like this .

The best way to apply is to find three shade that not only compliment you , but each other . I have found that a very light cream and even whites go really well with everything . The best thing to do is buy a really light shade , middle light shade , and deep shade .

To apply the lightest shade , sweep onto the entire lid all the way up into your brow line . This brings out the eye making it look larger and more open . The middle shade is applied next onto the eyelid . This really should be light to keep up the eye opening effect . Lastly apply the darkest shade in a line on the crease of your eye . In the middle . It causes definition and leaves a really pretty look . When you have done all these , take your finger and blend upwards . This softens the whole look and leaves a more natural appearance .

Lastly , try to go with what you are wearing . If you are wearing blue , use a brown or neutral shadow . It even matters what color lip stick you wear when choosing your shadow shades . If you are playing up your lips , understate your eyes . If you play up both you end up looking like a mask instead of person . If you match your shadow too closely to what you are wearing it makes you hard on peoples eyes . You just go too much together like a blur . Then if you contradict and wear a clashing color you end up looking like an ornament . If all else fails , go neutral and go soft .
