The Bottom Line Be sure you need a low temperature bag before purchasing it, or you will be left hot in the summer months.
Keep in mind with today's choices of either down or synthetic bag, 0-20 degrees is for harsh conditions. A 0-20 degree bag is meant for temperatures, which are not common for your average backpacker. First decide which type of fill you want, down fill is best for long periods of travel because it is not bothered by compaction, but it does not dry fast. Synthetic fill is the opposite, with fast drying and poor compaction over time, it will lead to the break down of the material. With that in mind, figure out what you are going to use the bag for. Buying a bag that is rated for cold temperatures will leave you extremely hot when you decide to go camping in July at a state park. Also a lower degree bag will weigh more and compact less. If you already have a pack, you might want to fit the sleeping bag in to it, before buying it to assure it will fit, if not, a compression sack can be purchased for around 20 dollars. Make sure the bag is the proper size, regular or long, a bag that is too short is worthless.  |
